Well, if it is bronchitis, humidity often works. Go into a small bathroom, shut he door, and shut the shower curtains, and turn on the shower, on hot. If the shower is part of a shower/bathtub, plug the tub for a while. Sit with your son on the toilet, and get him to breathe deep. If the coughing ends, or slows down, you have hit it. If it worsens, get out of the bathroom. Of course, practice good safety, neither him or you should get near all that hot water. And make sure the tub is clean, you don't want to aerosolize all those germs. If that works, put a large pot of water on the stove and boil it. Watch it for safety reasons. More humidity in the house will help.
Postural drainage might help, turn him one way, let him cough, turn him another let him cough.
Bronchitis is a cycle, irritation occurs, you cough, the irritation increases, you cough. You need something to break the cycle.
You did not say how old your son is, in adults, narcotic cough syrup is often prescribed. It stops the cough[and the person, too] and stops the cycle. I had bronchitis this winter, and that is what finally did it, along with the humidity therapy. 3 doses of Tussionex, and my cough was 3/4 gone.
Another thing is to make sure nothing else is contributing to the problem. Make sure his bed linens are really clean, and buy some Febreeze allergy, and spray his mattess really good, and let it dry. Same thing for his pillow, or if the pillow is really old, get a new one.
And, continue with the meds the doctor ordered. Bronchitis is tenacious, it can last a long time.
If this goes on much longer, go back to the doctor.
Warm fluids help, too. Adequate hydration helps.
