What is the doctor going to do?

The doctor will take a look at your back checking for the usual scoliosis symptoms. He will most likely also take xrays of your back and measure your curve (the Cobb angle). Once that's done, he'll recommend what to do.

Here's a little info on scoliosis treatment.

If you have a curve that is giving you trouble, you will need to see a scoliosis specialist. Any doctor that doesn't have a scoliosis specialty doesn't have the expertise to treat scoliosis.

Any curve under 10 degrees is considered normal and probably isn't monitored.

Curves from 10-25 degrees are mild but should be monitored, especially if you're still growing.

Curves from 25-40 degrees are moderate with bracing possible. You will need monitoring, especially if you're still growing.

Surgery may be recommended if your curve doesn't respond to bracing. Bracing will do no good if you're through growing. The purpose of a brace isn't to make your curve better, but rather to keep the curve from becoming worse.

Curves greater than 45 degrees is major. Surgery may be recommended. This depends on many things, but whether you're done growing, whether your curve is increasing, whether your heart and lungs are in danger of being squeezed by your curve, whether you're in pain, quality of life, etc.

Unfortunately, nothing can *fix* structural scoliosis. Surgery can keep the curve from getting worse, and in most cases, will reduce the curve but most likely your spine won't be straight (unless you are very flexible in the area to be fused, then you might be lucky). There are cases where the surgery is less invasive than other cases, but having the usual posterior incision isn't too bad.

Chiropractors, message therapists, acupuncturists, etc., can't fix structural scoliosis. These people adjust the soft, connective tissues and that may (or may not, you can't tell ahead of time) make you feel better, but remember, structural scoliosis is not a connective tissue disease. Your spine is growing curved.

Oh, and hope you're feeling better :D Report It

  • I don't know, so I can't be of much help. I'm so sorry, hopefully everything will turn out well.

    he will most likely
take this little plastic thing tell you ta bend over
and run it over your spine.
depending on how bad your scoliosis is.
    depends really on what happens.
if its not that bad then you will just come back in a couple months for a check up
but if its bad you could get a back brace.
    good luck"].
hope this was a little help!

    Its nothing really.
they just look at your back and the shoulder alignment and then send you in for x-rays. they then take a bunch of different angles of your spine, which tends to take forever, and will decide from there if you need correction, which can include a brace or possibly surgery (but its rare).
then every six months you go for a check up just to make sure it isnt getting any worse.

yea you might have to wear a brace for it to stop getting worse , but once you stop growing taller around 20 you wont need it.
I have a mild case of it , but i stopped growing , so i still hget checkups for it , but you vcan do some stretches also.

All the way from nothing, to discussing possibilities to trying a few devices and or surgery. I have a mild form of scoliosis in my very low back, that was neglected by my parents, and I didn't even know about untill a few years ago when I hurt my back, and x-rays found it. Of course my parents neglected to tell me that I had scoliosis too, so I have spent years wondering what in the world is so wrong with my back. I have bad problems with standing for any period of time.Sitting in hard chairs, on the floor, ect can kill me. While a steel rod in your spine sounds like yuck....I hope you get and or at least consider options.

    i was diagnosed with scoliosis at 13;

at the doctor they measure your curve (with an xray or a scoliometer), if its over 30 (Cobb angle), they consider giving you a back brace.

This page is pretty good for what to expect:

    Good luck
