The problem with the lice shampoo is that lice have become immune to it. And it really isn't that good for kids. One thing I've heard that works is to coat their hair with cetaphil lotion and leave it on overnight, you can cover it with a shower cap or something. Then you have to comb it out, and this is the most important thing, you have to get every single egg out of the hair, if you even leave one egg that is enough to re-populate their hair with lice again. Use three or four different combs with different size spaces between the teeth of the comb. Once you get it combed out, wash the Cetaphil out of their hair. Good luck. Once you get the lice out, you can prevent them somewhat by using styling products in your children's hair. People think that lice like dirty hair, but they actually find it easier to attach to clean hair. I'm not saying let your children run around with dirty hair, but using mousse or gel and a little bit of hairspray can help some.

once is usually enough, must consult with your doctor, check for reinfection sources etc

Ok, I had lice lice summer, and I had to put it on like 4 times (A WEEK). Depending on how bad it is, depends on how much you put on. If it is really bad, do it aobut 2-4 times a week. If it is not to bad, then about 2 times a week. Not bad AT ALL 1 time a week, maybe 2.
You should also combs 2 times a day (A.M, P.M). If this doesnt help (Lice are immune to rid sometimes) then I would get a prescription.
