No amount is good; but a very recent study shows that the more one smokes, the higher the risks. For example; if you smoke 1/2 pack a day for 20 years, you carry the same risk as someone who smokes 1 pack per day for 10 years.
Any family history of cancer increases that risk many times over (whether smoking related or not).

My experience is that most people who start with only a couple of cigarettes a day will increase that amount over a very short period of time. A couple of months is plenty of time to develop an addiction. Please find another way to stay awake before you become addicted. Caffeine is better than cigarettes. Take it from someone who knows from first hand experience.

The below link may help:

Scientific studies have shown that even having 1 cigarette a day will increase your chances of getting lung, throat or mouth cancer.

There simply is no safe amount, although I sympathise as I'm one a day at the moment for the same reasons!

Smoking damages your blood vessels, and leads to heart attacks, strokes and vascular disease, impotence in men, and puts you at higher risk for MANY cancers.

It also kills the cells that keep your lungs clean, and makes your airways more reactive. You won't notice any symptoms of lung disease until it's too late to do anything about it.

I take care of smokers in the OR all the time, and they're sicker people, across the board.

The sooner you can quit, the better. There is nothing that can undo the damage that the 3000 toxins in cigarettes cause.
