Not all people with clogged arteries (arterial sclerosis) are over weight. Heart disease has a lot to do with genetics. There are other contributing factors as well stress, poor nutrition, sedentary lifestyle, and smoking.

The myth that cardiovascular disease is a man's illness is not so. It is the leading cause of death among females...more so than breast cancer. Perhaps this is because women have become "bread winners" just as much as men therefore leading to higher stress, poorer nutrition and a more sedentary lifestyle.

If you want to avoid heart disease...eat healthy (stay away from fatty over processed fast food which is PACKED with canola oil (raises cholesterol) , work out and try to lead a stress free life...meditate or do yoga if your stressed as opposed to lighting up a smoke. Smoking is the number one cause of heart disease in women under 45.

smoking cigerrattes can ultimately cause clogged arteries from the build up of plaque in the blood

Being fit doesn't really matter if you still eat crappy food. It's caused by a build up of cholesterol and fatty acids. So if your diet is high in those things, it doesn't matter how healthy you appear. It used to be that it was much more common in men, but heart disease is one of the main causes of death in women now too.

Ingestion of unhealthy fats/foods. Many foods, especially fast foods, contain hydrogenated/ partially hydrogenated/ trans fats which are bad fats that can buildup in arteries. Some thin people eat lots of fat food but do not gain weight b/c of very high metabolism or other genetic fat burning ability. However, the ability to burn up the extra fat instead of gaining the weight does not prevent these bad fats from going through the body and that is when some of these get deposited onto the arteries.

eating fats

If they are healthy, then they won't have clogged arteries. Being thin is only one factor, there are many more. Main reasons are poor lifestyle choices.
