I have an enlarged heart and have to take furosemide each day. However, I find t!

Question: causes me pain and my kidneys feel under great pressure and I always feel the need to go to the loo. So I've substituted this with a herbal compound which seems to be just as effective without the side effects. Though I do take furosemeide at least twice a week.

Would it be advisable for me to have a chat with my very busy GP or would it be okay for me to carryon as I'm doing.

Keeping down the edema is the job of a diuretic. In your case it's Lasix (furosemide). You have Congestive Heart Failure you need to take your meds daily. It helps lower your Blood Pressure and eliminate excess fluids in the tissues, especially the lungs.

Talk to your GP. Dont take chances with your heart. There may be a different medicine he can try you on which will suit you better

Its dangerous of you to substitute your water tablet for anything else. The reason you need to pass water so often is that the drug is doing its job...removing excess fluid from your body to help your heart function properly and not be under excess strain. If your heart has to work harder to circulate and pump blood around your body it will become more enlarged and you will experience increased swelling of your legs and feet, breathlessness and eventually pulmonary oedema. Go to your doc..

I would have the chat with the GP. The medication you are on is designed to eliminate excess fluids from your system to avoid putting undue stress on your heart - & the particular medication you mention is known to be a mineral sparing one (ie it doesn't flush all the good things out of your system with the fluids).

I am a great believer in alternative remedies & am in no way discouraging your use of these remedies, but many herbal compounds have an effect on the circulatory system (inc. you heart obviously) and your GP really should do his or her homework to see if this is the best course of action for you in light of your wishes & discomfort.

Best wishes

Monitor your weight daily. If it starts going up on your standard diet chances are you are beginning to retain fluid and you are not taking enough diuretic. Shortly thereafter you will begin to get swelling in the ankles and shortness of breath. If you rely on herbals alone you are taking a chance.

Of course you would notice a greater need to go to the bathroom. Furosemide is a powerful diuretic, and it reduces fluid levels in the body, to help lower the demands on your heart so that it hopefully will either shrink back down some or at least not enlarge. You are playing a dangerous game here with your heart, as you can find yourself in congestive heart failure. Herbal supplements, while useful in some cases- are not regulated in the same manner as pharmaceuticals are. Plus, as they are plant origin, the level of active ingredient can vary from bottle to bottle, batch to batch and company to company. If your prescription is causing you distress, then you really should discuss the matter with your cardiologist or GP before you try adjusting medications on your own. Needless to say, it is not okay to carry on as you are doing. You are endangering your heart, and if you develop congestive heart failure, or the heart enlarges beyond a certain point, you could be facing the need for a transplant or possible death. It's too serious not to discuss with the doctor, and too dangerous to play with.

you need to inform your doctor what your doing with the medication, even letting him know of the extra over-the-counter type... there are 3 people in this life you don't wanna screw with 1. doctor, 2. lawyer, 3. child care provider~ these people really need to know what is going on with YOU. Thanks.

Well, first question is WHY is your heart enlarged?

The heart can be enlarged by a number of reasons - but taking furosemide helps to rid the body of the excess fluids in the circulatory system to allow the heart to pump more efficiently. This would explain your constant urge to go to the loo.

By not taking furosemide, you will certainly begin to notice increased fluid build up in your circulatory system, your heart will begin to pump less efficiently and you start to notice swelling on certain parts of the body - starting with the hands and feet and face. This herbal medication you're talking about may or may not be as effective as taking furosemide. Therefore...

Your best bet would be to speak to your physician and ask him/her what would be the best option for you.

Take care.

Always discuss changes in medication with your GP,especially when the condition they are for is so potentially serious. If he really is busy then ask his receptionist for the last appointment of the day; that will allow you to talk without considering other patients who are waiting for him..or her..to be free and if he has an evening engagement then he can always ask you to come back again. I should think that, at best, he will want to run some tests to find out how things are going..or you might ask for the tests yourself if he proves to be very strongly opposed to herbal remedies without having any good reason to offer for his position on them. Most importantly, however, do see him and soon.

I would strongly advise you to see your GP, or at the very least have a word with your local pharmacist. It is never a good idea to mess around with medication your doctor has prescibed for you and he/she may be able to prescribe a medicine that suits you better.

it is may be cardiomegaly you have to consult with doctor and take medicine under his prescription.take care

NO NO NEVER use any herbal compound without FIRST talking to your doctor!!! DO NOT TAKE that stuff!!! Call your doctor and tell him what is going on when you take the furosemeide! You are dealing with your heart here!
