How can I tell if I have strep throat?!

Question: I've never even had a sore throat before! But now all of a sudden my throat just hurts really bad when I swallow. It hurts the most when I first wake up and when I'm about to go to sleep. And my voice sounds different too, ugh!!!

Thanks for answers! =)

Well I'll just give you my strep throat experience....sore throat when swallowing, usually lasting all day. If you open your mouth and look at your throat it will be bright red and look really irritated. May even have white bumps in back of throat and on tonsels. Tonsels may also be swollen. might have fever. there may be other problems/ilness causing your voice to sound different so its hard to say. Best way to tell is to go to the dr and have them do a throat culture and find out if you have it so you can start taking antibiotics. I hope you feel better soon :=)

If you look at your throat with a flashlight and it's just red it's probably not strep. If there are white patches or pus or anything like that you need to get a strep test. Also with strep you don't normally have cold symptoms like a runny nose or anything.

If you like to use herbs, Pau D'Arco is a great one that has antibacterial properties and may even be able to kill strep throat germs. Get the one in the dropper bottle and put a few drops into some hot tea and drink it several times a day (whatever it says on the side of the bottle). Might save you a trip to the doctor.

Get a strep test done at doctors office. Strep can turn into much worse ailmemts if you let it go.

if it's strep you will notice that the back of your throat it extremely red and in later stages you may have white looking sores back there as well they resemble canker sores only larger and more painful.
also you will also run a mid grade fever anywhere from 99-104.
if you notice the sores get to a doctor right away if left untreated it can cause major problems else where in your body.
your doctor will then prescribe you an antibiotic, usually Amoxicillin or Ampicillin if you are not allergic to Penicillin.
be sure to tell The doctor if you are allergic to penicillin.
Good Luck :)
