Hypoglycemia, don't understand something?!

Question: I don't understand why someone would take a sugar tablet to help with hypoglycemia, well I do and I dont. I think I have it and when i have an attack of it I feel like Ineed sugar, but wouldn't some carbs with a protein and high fibre be better so you don't get another quick rise like another sugar rush. I would think straight sugar would just cause it to occur again. Like is it just more of a quick fix and a high protein/fibre diet is a good preventative thing or what?

I think you're right. A lot depends on how low your blood glucose goes when you consider yourself hypoglycemic. If it gets dangerously low (like below 50 mg/dl or 3 mmol/l) then drastic intervention might be called for. If it's just slightly low, like between 60 and 70 mg/dl (3.3 - 3.9 mmol/l), then I would take the course you're mentioning. But, instead of what you mention, I would recommend healthy fruits, nuts, whole grains, or veggies... stuff with a relatively low glycemic index. That will be less likely to spike the insulin production which is probably what got you there in the first place.

you want to get glucose into your blood stream rapidly, straight sugar, honey will do that...if you take in carbs then you have to digest them down to glucose before the sugar wll enter your blood stream....as long as you don't take too much sugar you'll be fine.....

They could take some quick sugar but they should also take something like protein or a carb that is whole like whole wheat toast or whole grain cereal for lasting results

If you suffer from a hypo, you need to have sugar, as a quick fix as if you dont you will drop unconcious..
if you eat something with carb, protein and high fibre your body will have to break it down to get to the hidden sugar, and it doesnt have time for that.
After this quick sugar fix it is good to have your meal to keep the blood sugar at a steady level.
