Treatment for TRICHOTILLOMANIA?!

Question: What should i know before seeing a doctor?
I just learned that there is a name for my condition and that it could be treatable. I'm going to see a doctor on Thursday and i heard that i would be prescribed medication.

Has anyone been through this? What medication should i stay away from, and what actually works?

I'm a student at a university about to graduate, my condition has been getting worse so i want to get help soon. On the other hand my major is very demanding and overwhelming so i do not want the medication to interfere with my ability to function.

Please give me advise, what kind of therapy and medication works without having too much interference with daily life?

Appreciate any input! Thanks

Tricho is actually a manifestation of obsessive compulsive disorder. With that in mind Psychotherapy works well. Psychotherapeutic measures include a combination of the behavioral therapy known as exposure and response prevention, and cognitive therapy. The efficacy of these approaches has been well established in patients with OCD.
Medications are also a mainstay therapy especially with selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors as first-line therapy.
You'll be fine.
Sincerely,
Doc

Unfortunately medications don't always work in the treatment of trich. Therapy and group therapy / support may be helpful. Sometimes a combination of meds and therapy works best. I suggest checking out this site as there is tons of info and you can find doctors and therapists as well as support groups in your area.

Best of luck!

I have suffered with it for all my life. Im 43 now. I have tried many medications for it. For me, they work for a while, then stopped working. Im not on anything now. I can only tell you that it seems to get better as you get older, keep stress levels down and try behavior modification therepy. Good luck to you.
