Donating a kidney to my father?!

Question: Donating a Kidney, daughter to father?
So my dad had a kidney transplant 13 years ago and he is due for another one soon. He will be 50 this year and just had triple bipass surgery 6 months ago. His kreatnin level is starting to go up a little (it is around 7), although he does not neeeeed the dilaysis yet because he can still function. My mom and I are probably both going to be tested to see if either one of us can do it (I know I am a match b/c i am his daughter.)
I really want to do it because I do not want to have him suffer through all of the dialysis again. I just don't know if I could personally handle it.

I am very upset and confused. Can anyone give me some advice??

(I am 18)

Well, first of all, just because you're his daughter, doesn't mean you're automatically a match. You have to have the same blood type and other DNA that matches perfectly to the donee. I can certainly understand your dilemma. You want to do this for your dad, but it's major surgery, and you probably wonder how you will feel physically with one kidney. On the other hand, you feel guilty if you are a match and decide not to be a donor. But first things first. Get tested to see if you are a match. If not, then you are off the hook. The transplant list is very long, and sometimes it takes a year or more to find a donor. Your dad can do very well on dialysis if he has to go on it temporarily. Also, you should talk to your dad to see if he wants you to make this sacrifice for him. He may be against it. And finally, you are a wonderful daughter to even consider giving dad a kidney. That's the greatest gift you can give another human being -- the gift of life! Good luck and God bless!

This is a very wonderful and admirable thing to want to do. You can handle it. Lots of people live with just one kidny and function perfectly.

hello, i m sorry to hear that your father have to go through all those pains. anyways, i think you can handle it if you really want to help him out. good luck!

Oh no. You are such a loving and brave daughter. I am sorry that your father is in pain right now and I hope he gets better. Please talk to your doctor about how your health would be in the future if you did decide to give one of your kidneys to your father. I am taking pathophysiology right now and our professor told us about a man who donated a kidney to his brother about 30 years ago and the man who donated is still living however his brother died (this was because of other complications so don't freak out too much). All in all, talk to your doc about the benefits and negatives of donating for yourself and your father and then discuss them with your family. Good luck!

Good for you, but just b/c you are his daughter does not mean than you will be able to donate it to him. You may not be a match. Also, you want ideal situations to transplant & right after a triple bypass may not be the best time. My advice would be to treat each day like its his last just in case, but most importantly PRAY. God can still work miracles & he listens to his children. Good Luck & you are a wonderful daughter.

Your father is really lucky to have you and your mom.

You never know, your mom may be a good donor, but you may be better since you share genetics with your father.

Something to think about is why your dad has kidney failure.
Is it something that is genetic?

If so, there is a possibility you could end up with the same condition. In that case,. donating a kidney would not be a great idea. i am sure the doctor will cover all of this.

Otherwise, there is no reason you cannot live a completely healthy life with one kidney.

Your father would not want you to do anything you are not completely comfortable with. It is major surgery and really painful.

Good luck.

Just because you are his daughter does not mean you are a match.

i was born with a dis formed kidney and its on my right side, one is 23% and the other is 86 and dropping. my mother has a kidney disease. that's why i have bad kidneys. I personally think its wonderful that you are willing to give you father a kidney. and I'm sincerely sorry about his conditions. GOD BLESS YOU!
