I was tested and diagnosed with mono about five weeks ago. The first indicator of mono is extremely swollen glands, especially in your throat. This makes it extremely painful (if not almost impossible) to swallow; it also becomes very painful to talk. I also had night sweats and a very high fever. That part was definitely not fun. I feel much better now, but I'm still feeling the effects of the exhaustion. I can't function unless I sleep at least nine hours at night and have at least a three hour nap during the day- this is especially hard to accomplish since I'm in college and I have a crazily large work load.

If you do have mono, take it easy for a while. You can't perform any physical activities, especially those that involve contact, because your spleen will probably be swollen and can be in danger of rupturing. Sleep as much as you can and drink a lot of fluids. Don't drink alcohol (one mistake that I made)- if you do be prepared for a swollen side and possibly one of the worst hangovers you will ever experience in your life. Because your spleen is swollen, your liver can also be affected. Thus, your ability to filter toxins (i.e. alcohol) is severely compromised.

Hopefully you don't have a bad case. Mono really can go either way. My case wasn't that severe, although I did relapse once when I didn't know that I had it. I do know a girl, though, who had to be flown home to the hospital because she developed hepatitis from her mono.

I had mono about 5 years ago. It's horrid. Severe exhaustion, painful swallowing, zero energy... it basically sucks. I was on the couch for 7 days straight, had to crawl to the bathroom. Hopefully yours won't be that bad, but expect to be pretty exhausted. If you do test positive, take it easy. It can take a long time to fully recover from mono.
