What is done for a hypothyroid (under active)?!

Question: I was diagnosed with an underactive thyriod. I see the doctor in a month. Is there anything that I can do about the tiredness and slugishness and wanting to sleep all the time? If I have to go on medication for this how will this help me?

Your thyroid gland creates a hormone called thyroxine (often called T3 and T4).

You will be given medication called TSH to replace the lost hormone. As soon as you get this you will feel superb within a few days. A friend of mine had it, got the tablets and was a new woman within the week!

Have a look here :- http://hcd2.bupa.co.uk/fact_sheets/html/...

And dont worry - youll be glad when you are on the medication. Sometimes they need to increase or decrease it to get the right level for you.

I started medication for underactive thyroid 2 months ago and I feel much better now, much higher energy, happier etc...
After the first month I started to get v. tired & gain weight again and had to have my dose upped, but am starting to feel great on the new dose.
Until you start meds, I don't think you can do anything. There is a list of foods to avoid, (avoiding them never helped me though), cruciferous vegetables such as:

broccoli, brussels sprouts, rutabagas, turnips, radishes, cauliflower, cabbage, mustard, kale, garden cress, bok choy and kohlrabi. Also included in the goitrogen catagory are millet, peaches, peanuts, radishes, spinach and strawberries

I'm sure the medication will help you once you're doctor has got you on the right dose. Good luck!

Your thyroid gland (directed by your pituary gland) produces up to 4 hormones, the principal of which is called thyroxin. However the balance between the four is very very fine (we are talking MICROgrams here (not MILLI gram). Your thyroid profile should be determined by atomic absorption (It is possible you are hypothyroid for T1 and hypert. for others.) In most of the cases (but wait for the result) you will be prescribed 100 to 150 MICROGRAMS thyroxine / day this varies slightly with the season and average day temp. Example of a brand name: Euthyrox. Immediately your metabolism will react and your fatigue and permanent cold will disappear . You have to be rechecked every 2 months.

There's nothing you can really do about getting rid of the tiredness, slugglishness and wanting to sleep all the time except going on the medication. Although, you should try to go to sleep at a reasonable time and get up around the same time if you can. The medication will help your energy levels in the long run but for me it wasn't an instant result. I was diagnosed about a year ago presenting the same symptoms as you and I was reluctant to go on the medication but I'm seriously glad I am. The best part about thyroxine (the medicine) is it is a hormone and therefore no side-effects unless you overdose. I hope you start feeling better soon and you will probably feel better quicker than me because I'm a teenager =).

I'm surprised your doctor didn't order the medication over the phone, then have you come back in 6 weeks after testing. That's what most doctors do. If you are so tired, call up the doctor and tell him/her that you need the medication now.

Thyroid medication helps to relieve all the symptoms that the conditioin has caused. Because the thyroid effects metabolism, it can have an effect on most symptoms in the body. It's very important to get your thyroid levels correct. You need to always test first thing in the morning, so that you get the proper dosage of medication.

Symptoms of the condition can include; weight gain, constipation, fatigue, depression, dry skin, dry thinng hair, muscle and joint aches, low body temp, low blood pressure, fertility problems, high cholesterol, ridged fingernails,,
