Being that you had one before will now make you more susceptible of getting another, but not knowing much of your history and what caused the DVT makes it a little difficult to give you specifics. C-Section?? Scleroderma?? Don't allow this to discourage having a child, it is a minor problem unless there is an underlying disease you have. Basically, make sure you walk alot, keep your circulation moving and don't sit with your legs crossed or sit on your knees etc. If your legs get swollen during pregnancy, obtain a pair of COTTON compression stockings (knee high..sigvaris is the most comfortable). Make sure you measure your legs before you get out of bed in the morning, this will assure the proper size and control the swelling before you swell. Talk with your MD cuz some people have other issues that don't allow them to wear these type of hosiery. Also, after having the baby while your in the hospital request calf or foot pumps. They are inflatable and basically mimic walking while your in bed to keep your circulation going. If your having a C-section then these should be used during the surgery. Most important is to let any type of physician know you have a history of DVT and take a baby ASA (terry coated) before/after any flights plus, on long car rides get out every hour to stretch your legs.

whats DVT?

I do ultrasound an know alot about what your asking. So, once you have had a dvt then your are automatically at higher risk of getting another one. I would say that you will be at risk especially if you have a c-section. Just talk to your ob/gyn and see what they think. But, I would say yes.

Probably a higher risk than someone who had no history of a DVT. What caused you to have a DVT (or did you have no risk factor - abnormal clotting, heart rhythm abnormality)?

You could probably lower your risk by wearing special stockings and doing leg exercises. You also might be placed on a blood thinner (aspirin or plavix) after the birth.

Just because you know that you're at risk lowers your chance of getting one again - now you know so you can do things to help prevent it.

every pregnancy is different. i was sick with my first child but my other 2 were just fine.

My OB/GYN told me that you are at a higher risk of having another DVT if you have already had one. I had one as a result from having my baby, so my doctor told me if I were to get pregnant again that I would have to be on the Lovenox injections through the entire pregnancy, just as a preventive measure. They may have you do that. Those shots are so darn expensive though, so hopefully you have good insureance!
