Acid Reflux - is there a scam going on???!

Question: I just want to ask because it seems like there is a double standard re: Acid Reflux.
On the one hand, it's quite normal for pregnant women to be violently refluxing for the whole 9 months, on the other hand if someone even starts refluxing, they get scoped and sometimes diagnosed with Barretts Esophagus.... doesn't make sense!! Maybe some of those pregnant women have Barretts too??? I can't understand if reflux is harmful or not, someone please help!!!!!!

It is harmful. Pregnant women can expect to get over their reflux when they deliver. There is a reason for the reflux. When a person who is not pregnant has reflux there is no reason to think they will get over it on their own. Scoping is way overused but doctors have to be sure there isn't another problem going on. . People should be told to lose weight and take other lifestyle measure to fix the problem.

acid reflux is uncomfortable and it stinks feels like your going to throw up oh and it burns.

the medicine to treat it is a scam they remove too much acid and when I'm out of meds my tummy makes too much acid to then acid reflux is even worse than before..

Acid Reflux is just a fancy word for heartburn that doctors came up with to sell more drugs.. don't believe the hype!

Acid reflux is harmful. I don't really see what you're getting at though.

Reflux is more comman in pregnant woman.
If it goes untreated it can be dangerous, result in damage of esphogus, and hernia and such.
There are natural ways to reduce reflux such as avoiding acidic foods, and not eating so many hours before bed, it can also be brought on by stress.
Also doctor prefer not to test pregnant woman for anything, that isn't life threatening, since medications will not be tolerated by the fetus.
Hope that helped.

My husband has acid reflux disease, it's bad he has ulcer in his stomach and esophagus. He takes a daily pill sometime two a day, the RX is the best for him, his mother, both brothers and one of his sisters has it bad. His uncle had it and died young it causes esophagus cancer, and left untreated and unchecked like his uncle and that's what happened. I've never heard of Barretts, I'm gonna look it up.

My boyfriend has acid reflux disease and I know that there are different levels of it. He has the worst case his doctor has ever seen and does have to take prilosec to contorol it. But in other cases there are many people who don't have it as bad and just have to take a tums to relieve it.
Now it can be harmful to your esophagus because it's kinda like burning acid in your stomache that does effect the esophagus. It all depends on what kind of level of Acid Reflux you have and if it's treated right.
Here's some websites that should explaine both Barrett's and Acid Reflux. Hope that helps.

hmmm.. good question... I think the difference is because of being pregnant... im guessing whaen you pregannt you tend to eat (craving foods) which can some times be acidy... and the whole baby in the stomach thing makes for more relfux. im sure it can be harmful in the long run. maybe checking with a doctor if reflux continues after giving birth. and then you would know . GOOD LUCK

No my nutritionist said it is a scam and we should change are diets and see whats foods makes your systems worse and try to avoid them. Exersise to helps alot. I know i had this for years..

Just think of acid going up and down soft tissue all the time...acid is corrosive but there is another word for it in my opinion "HEARTBURN". I think dr's and pharmaceutical companies creative a super tums and want to charge you an arm and a leg for it and on top of that you have to go to your Dr. to shell out some more money to get a diagnosis of ar and you have to get a prescription.

Your body needs acid to create bile so that it can break down the foods you eat. When you don't have enough, that's when you start having heartburn or ar. If you have these problems take a shot of organic apple cider vinegar followed with some water. Work's like a charm and you're supporting an organic co. instead of greedy pharmaceutical co.'s

No it does not make sense. Only a doctor can diagnose, not you just speculating and finding correlations.

I believe that many medications are needlessly prescribed. But medicine is a business. If a doctor doesn't have answers or doesn't run tests, they are considered to be not doing anything to help and patients will go else where.
Real reflux can be very harmful. But with pregnancy there are many hormones going nuts, and it is hormones that tell your brain and your stomach what to do.

You do not have to be pregnant to have this problem. I had it for years and they just kept giving me medication for it that did not help. Finally last year they did some testing and I had a major problem. I had a hole in mu esophagus that went into my stomach and it was pushing my intestines back up thru the hole.

Anyway, it was very complicated and I had to have major surgery and have my stomach repositioned. Over the last year I have lost 40 pounds because of the surgery and major diarrhea. I have been dehydrated and very ill. So, I am thankful that they took the test. For years they ignored my problem and just said I had GERD.

I only wish they had tested me much sooner. I hope this will help you see that this can be a very serious illness and not just a case of reflux or heartburn.

I don't know what you are basing your information on but from someone who works in the medical field the explanation is clear:

1. Pregnant women who start having symptoms of GERD during their pregnancy with no history of GERD are not scoped because there is an obvious explanation for their symptoms. The displacement of their stomach and esophagus by the uterus causes the reflux. Barretts is distinctly different from GE RD.....and Barretts is three times more common in men than women.

2. Secondly, not everyone with GERD is diagnosed with Barretts or scoped. However, if you do have GERD your chances of developing Barretts is higher, and esophageal cancer can develop as quickly as 2-5 years. So, if people have a long standing history of GERD that is severe and frequent than they should be scoped for their own good!

3. Barretts is much more dangerous than GERD. The epithelial cells of your esophagus and stomach are different. Barretts is when the cells from your stomach start to be produced in your lower esophagus. To have abnormal cells growing in your body is dangerous and can easily lead to cancer.

Barretts is becoming more common because obesity and overeating are becoming more common. White males who are overweight are the majority of people who have Barretts. They overeat, are overweight and develop GERD from overfilling themselves, in return the GERD over a period of years causes Barretts and Barretts turns to cancer.

It isn't a double standard but rather just an obvious difference depending on the patient population.
