Attn:Medical Persons...Colostomy Question!?!

Question: My husband has had a colostomy for about 3 years now. We've gone "cold turkey" on his love of popcorn so far.

My question is, can he, every once in a while eat a bag of popcorn? We have no problems with his stoma at all. If he does poo-poo all advice and eats a bag anyway, what should I watch out for?

And finally, is it possible that he could safely have a bag every once in a while?

By the way, his nick name, while he was working(he's retired now and 68) was "Popcorn". Due to his love of the stuff!!!

hello, i am an ileostomate, similar to a colostomy. I've had my appliance for 23 yrs. so I truly understand your concern.

As long as his MD says it's ok followed by the fact that he never had problems in the past, he should be ok to try a little bit of popcorn and then gradually have 1/2 bag or so once in awhile.

Indications for problems would be no output for over 3-6 hrs, severe cramping coming in waves--sort of like contractions, nausea and or vomiting, distended stomach, plus the fact he'd be doubled over on the floor in pain.

If that should happen, get him to the ER immediately so they can evaluate, do stat blood work and xrays, and give him something for the pain. I am a frequent flyer myself due to Crohn's so I know what a partial obstruction is. You don't want to mess with it.

Hope this helps. feel free to email me with questions.

best of luck.

Is popcorn the reason he got the colostomy? The seeds&hulls causing repeated infections(diverticulitis)! If so~ I would'nt risk doing any harm to whats left!!
I've seen a few people eat it(with colostomys),Blew the bag right off!
If you decide to try~PLZ~ start with small amounts- pick each piece carefully~ See how your body responds~then decide on the bag! Everything in moderation! I guess I wouldn't advise it! But it's your decesion!
