To check for pregnancy, you put your arm in a cows rectum not the vagina. Sometimes a calf will have a leg back (in a normal birth a calf comes out front feet first hooves pointing down--kinda like they're diving out) and someone will have to put their arm in the birth canal to put the calf's leg where it's supposed to be.
