I have TMJ. My jaw is locked, how can i unlock it?[read details]?!

Question: Im only 13,and the specialist recommends surgery, but the earliest time we could do it is about a year and a half because he says i need braces first just to straighten my teeth, and i have no more growth left in my jaw so i cant fix my BIG overbite. My jaw gets locked almost every night, and usually i go back to sleep and when i wake up it unlocks. I never have any pain though. But today it didnt unlock on my right side of my mouth and it still hasnt. I cant open my mouth all the way. Are there any remedies i can do to unlock it???

Even a big overbite can be corrected. It is probably putting pressure on your jaw which is why it is locked. Get a second, third, fourth, fifth, even tenth opinion before you get the surgery. It is a very big step and it may be possible to correct your problem with the removal of teeth and repositioning of your remaining teeth. As for your jaw being locked today... Take a pain reliever and some kind of muscle relaxant. Since you are young you need something mild but still effective. Try to contact your family dentist or doctor for a mild muscle relaxant. It will help you with the pain more than anything. Hope you feel better.

i am 12 and i have tmj too but my dentist has not said anything to me about surgery and i have TMJ really badly i dont thing there is anything u can do to unlock it sorry

Relax! While TMJ can be scary when your jaw locks up, freaking out about it can often make it worse since you'll tense up. That's probably the reason why your jaw is unlocking at night when your body is resting and relaxed.
