Slow Digestion?!

Question: I'm a nursing student, and we have learned that after a meal, the stomach should be pretty much empty after 2 hours or so.
However, I can eat dinner at 6pm, go to bed at 11pm, and wake up 12 hours later and still have a full stomach from the previous night's meal.
Obviously, there is something wrong with the sphincter that leads into my small intestine, right? What could be wrong with me?
I don't have health insurance, so don't suggest that I see a doctor.
Thank you.

Not to SOUND like a doctor or anything, but would you label your eating routine as healthy? Do you eat enough fiber(more fruits and veggies. Too much whole grain like cereal and such actually makes it harder to break down)? Do you get at least 8 hours of sleep? Without enough sleep, every function of the body is effected. Your body is too tired, therefore even your metabolism slows down. Perhaps this is also causing your stomache malfunction. Most importantly, do you excersize regularly? Moving around can (again) help you break down food.

I had a similar problem last year and had to see a doctor. She told me to do exactly this, and now, everything for me is regular.

Hope I helped even a bit. Good luck.

Well the colon is long when its stretched out so you may have an extra long colon? They say that John Wayne had about 40lbs of undigested food in his colon at his autopsy.

This assessment is incorrect. For one, I hardly believe that it takes 2 hours to digest a meal, unless it is an awfully small meal of celery. I do not beleive that everything taught in school is true. Plus, stomach plays a small role in digestion. The liver, pancreas, kidneys and other organs play an important part in the digestive process and they must. be taken into consideration. Also all types of foods cannot possibly be precessed at the same speed. For example, it takes around 3 days to fully digest a steak. If you have a full stomach after 12 hours of eating means that you ate a high protein meal, I would bet. High protein meals tend to stick around longer.

You might want to double check your school book to make sure it is a reliable source after you read this
