Pink eye - cheak red and hot?!

Question: My four year old has pink eye according to the Dr, he also has a barking cold and a fever. The Dr gave him drops for the pink eye but said she could not see any other problem (at the time) After giving him two doses of the drops his cheak became red and warmer than the other side. Is this from the drops or is it from the infection that I think he has? As a side note has anyone had problems with recording the proper temp from an ear thermometer? Seems you have to have it in just the right spot or a temp of 103F will come up as 98F.

Dear Mom - If the white part of your little guy's eye still looks white (not bloodshot) and his upper and lower eyelids are red, warm, tender, and swollen on just one side, there's a really good chance he may have "periorbital cellulitis". That's a bacterial infection that's really an emergency. Even though the ear thermometers are easier and faster to use, their readings are usually incorrect. Go back to the oral or rectal thermometer. I know they're not as convenient, but they're way more accurate. But have the little guy checked at the ER ASAP - periorbital cellulitis is a fast-growing infection that can quickly develop into meningitis. But, if he's NOT running a fever AND the white part of his eye looks bloodshot AND he's got white/yellow mucus seeping out of the corner of his eye, keep an eye on him and keep using the drops as they're prescribed.

ear thermometers are inaccurate, get rid of it.
the redness and swelling could easily be a result of the medication, call your doctor.

return to the doctor for the cough.
