A probable diagnosis of influenza is based on your symptoms and the information you provide. It's an educated guess based on knowledge and experience. Common viruses like rhinovirus, Epstein-Barr, adenovirus and influenza don't require testing. The symptoms they cause are so classic that a diagnosis can usually be made from these alone. More complicated and serious viral conditions can be tested for through virology.

Based on what you described here, this may not have been the flu. Something else, perhaps viral in nature. Gastroenteritis, maybe.

Mostly just his clinical opinion from your history and his exam.

There is a simple lab test he may order that, if positive, is pretty accurate. If negative, not so accurate. You may still have the flu.

I just give it a little more time. Viruses can take awhile to get completely over.

Sounds like a mild case of the flu. No real need to got to the doctor if you feel better than before but if you want to be sure you can go.

They go by symptoms; the way you look, feel, check for fever, swollen lymph nodes, tenderness, sound of lungs, stomach sounds, etc. Hope you feel better
