Like all motion sickness, the eyes and motion sensors of the inner ear are sending conflicting information. When you look down on a boat, your eyes are telling your brain you are stationary. Meanwhile you inner ear motion sensor is telling your brain you are rocking back and forth. The best "trick" to avoid it is to keep your eyes fixed on the horizon outside. In this way, the eyes will give the brain clues to the motion you are traveling which will concur with that the inner ear is transmitting. Make sure they are in sync.
Motion sickness has to do with internal ear fluids. The outer and inner ear work together to keep your body in balance. When you are travelling your brain gets two signals - one that says you are not in motion and the other sees travelling visuals.
The previous answers are right. A good tip is sit in the front and don't ever read.
