Diabetes and high blood pressure will not prevent you from being a donor because we can medicate or adjust procedures to safely compensate for those barriers.

If you have other borderline health conditions, theres a chance we cant accept you as a donor. That includes heart disease, history of smoking or history of significant lung disease. In general, the safety of the donors comes first, and we will not compromise theirhealth.

Bone marrow transplantation is a potentially life-saving procedure for many patients with cancers of the blood, but a national donor shortage exists.

Bone marrow transplants are performed mainly in patients with cancers of the blood, such as leukemia and lymphoma, when a patients bone marrow is not functioning properly. Transplants also are used to treat some solid organ tumors, including ovarian and kidney tumors.

Bone marrow, the tissue within large bones such as hip bones, contains stem cells, which manufacture new blood cells.

When bone marrow is damaged, it makes a patients immune system unhealthy. The goal of a transplant is to eliminate a patients unhealthy immune system with high-dose chemotherapy and then infuse stem cells from a donors healthy bone marrow into the patients bloodstream. We are trying to create a healthy, new immune system.
