I am 30 wks preg and i just had the gestational diabetes testing last week. the !

Question: i didn't even know they were going to do that testing on that day so right before i went, i happened to have scarfed down a bunch of jellie bellies! (it was my birthday and my cousin bought me can full of them) anyway, the next day, the doctor's office called and said "your glucose levels were a bit high so we need you to come in for the 3-hour testing." i didn't have gd with my first pregnancy so i'm thinking my glucose levels came back high cuz of all the candy. am i right? what do you think? (of course, i'm still going in for the testing this week anyway)

You are exactly right. The first test is based on what your blood sugar levels should be if you hadn't eaten at all. The second test is standard anytime the first test results are abnormal. It will be more or less the same procedure (fasting the night before), only they will test your blood once an hour for three hours. I'm sure you'll be fine. I actually did the same thing when I was pregnant, except I stopped at McDonald's and ate hotcakes before my appointment. Good luck and I hope all goes well!

It may have influenced the sugar level. I had an elevated level for my first gestational diabetes test, but the 3-hour test came back normal. Take a good book to read because you will be there for a while. Good luck.

You are absolutely right! A random blood sugar test ordinarily does not recommend coming in starved from the night prior. (which does not make sense since, if you have eaten... your sugar level will obviously be high). Besides, in pregnancy, they keep a low threshold to monitor your blood glucose. Hence even a slight increase in your glucose value will warrant further investigation i.e 3 hour glucose tolerance test. For this test, you will be asked to starve from the night before and be on a "high" carb diet before that.

Dont worry. I am sure you will be fine. My wife did the same thing when she went for the random blood test (she had a glass of milk an hour before). So, if you had candy.... your blood suguar must have definitely been high! But when my wife had the 3 hr test... she was absolutely normal.

So you see, you are in the same group. Dont worry. You will be fine. Just enjoy your pregnancy.
