Alergic Reaction ceclor and ammoxicilian?!

Question: ok, i know im alergic to ceclor. When I have ceclor, i break out in hives. Now, ive always taken ammoxicilian for bacterial infections. Last month, I had an ear infection, and ammoxicilian did nothing. So I started a z-pack. That cleared up, and now I had strep symptoms, so i went to the doctor to get tested for strep. They said they'd let me know if it came back positive, and they gave me ammoxicilian. Well, I've been taking this since friday, and just last night I broke out in hives. I ignored it, and they were gone this morning. Now I have a fat lip, and I don't know whats going on. Should I stop the ammoxicilian? I do not have strep, but they didn't tell me to keep going or stop.

Please Help!

If you stop the infection can flare up again. Many antibiotics act by only prohibiting the existing bacteria from reproducing so that your body's immune system will not be fighting a losing battle (it keeps killing but they keep reproducing). If you stop too early, there could still be some bacteria that would then be able to reproduce and possibly overwhelm your immune system again. So don't just stop.

I would stop taking it for the time being though, IMMEDIATELY. But I would call my doctor, or nurse. If you have a complicated medical set up you might just want to try an urgent care center (an allergic reaction is a viable reason to go). If you have the number of the doctor or nurse or their practice then you might be able to leave a message or talk to them and they might even prescribe over the phone (faxing in an Rx or something to a nearby pharmacy... although since this is a new thing they might want you to come in. It's not that weird to develop allergies to these things. You might even suggest that they put you on something like the z-pack since that worked so well. I often suggest that to my doctor since ammoxicillan no longer works for me either and I'm also allergic to ceclor. If there is a good reason that that won't work, they are usually kind enough to tell me why.

So: stop taking it (there is probably a warning on the bottle that says that in fact) and call your doctor immediately. They need to give you something else most likely.

Yea but that can become ineffective too. Be sure to always let your body try to fight small infections: don't go running for a z-pack every time no matter how wonderful they are ;) Report It

  • My son had taken amomoxicillian several times before he broke out with it the last time towards the end of the dosing schedule..... I would take some benedryl tonight, just in case your tongue or throat start swelling also and call your Dr. tomorrow.....

Yes, stop ammoxicillan and call your doctor to notify your doctor of a possible development of an ammoxicillan allergy.

You really need to figure out why you are so susceptible to infection if you don't know. Long term antibiotic use is not the answer for everything. Try looking at the root cause.

you have angioneurotic edema caused by Amoxicillin. This is an allergic reaction. If you have shortness of breath you might need to go to the emergency room. If you have an allergy to Ceclor you can also have an allergy to the Penicillins. (Amoxicillin belongs to the Penicillin family). Treatment is stopping the offending antibiotics and starting Diphenhydramine (Benadryl).
