The stockings you are talking about are called TED stocking which is short for thrombo embolism deterent stocking. They maintain a graduated pressure up the leg to encourage return flow. If your mom is able to move her legs eg wriggle or flex her feet and move her calves then this aids greatly aswell. As for treatment there are several options depending on the length of bedstay. There is heparin which is used in a hospital setting and requires monitoring by blood tests. There is clexane which is an injection that is usually used as an interim measure when going onto warfarin or coumadin as it may also be called. Once the warfarin level (a blood test called an INR) has reached a therapeutic level usually between 2 and 3.5, then the clexane is ceased. Warfarin is an oral dose taken once daily. Clexane is an injection given in the fatty stomach tissue around the navel. Some people can't take warfarin so they may be on mid to long term clexane for example pregnant women. Aspirin is a mild anticoagulant. There are also drugs called platelet inhibitors eg plavix which can be used but they are usually on cardiac patients and can be quite expensive.

you should be asking a doctor this

i know that aspirin thins the blood to help prevent clots but you can get prescribed aspirin tablets, however you will need a prescription from a doctor. whatever you do don't let them prescribe warfarin tablets (key ingredient in rat poison) which also thins the blood

best to ask a doctor nd not yahoo because if your mum gets a bruise and is taking unprescribed medication to prevent clotting, she will just keep bleeding.

Patients can be given small dosages of Warfarin. These must be careully administered and the patients monitored and checked to guage their blood quality levels.

try massaging your mom's legs everytime you visit her. massaging helps in blood circulation.
