Can the respiratory flu lead to strep throat?!

Question: My eight year old has had the flu for five days. She just started throwing up. She's been on Tamiflu for five days as well. I called her pediatrician and they want her to come in for a strep test. Could this be a result of the flu and sinus drainage?

More than likely yes. Tamiflu is a wonderful drug for the flu.... and just the flu. Your pediatrician is wanting to test for strep for a good reason. Especially if she is just getting over the flu. If she is running a temp, and has any other symptoms like: ear ache, pus pockets on tonsils than don't wait any longer get her in asap. If she has sinus drainage usually they will not test for strep, because drainage would not cause strep to occure.

neither. strep is a bacteria. flu is a virus. they do not cause each other. however, at eight, and likely in school, she could have been exposed to both. sinus drainage is just a symptoms of colds (viruses), allergies or bacteria.

While it is true that the flu would not directly lead to strep, the mucus and embattled immune system could make conditions ripe for a bacterial infection to set in. Of course, if he has been home for the last five days, who would he have caught it from?

They did the same thing when my daughter had the flu, doctor said it is common for the flu to go into ears and throat causing infections. My daughter is 6 this was about a month ago, and after the flu for 5 days she ended up back at the doctor negative for strep, but positive for ear infections.
If she is not feeling any better after 5 days, I would absolutely go to the Dr. Good luck, hope she is feeling better soon.

Not directly, but the sress can help a secondary infection sneak in. Get it checked, it might just be inflamation, but Strep is more dangerous and shouldn't be ignored.
