Hello, about acne (those who have alredy consulted a dermo.)......?!

Question: Hello, i am a 14 yr old male who is severly effected by acne.
I have tried everything from clearasil to proactive and nothing worked.
So i have decided to consult a dermatologist.

3 questions:
1) Is it embarassing to stand in a dematologist with all people staring at your acned face?

2) what are the procedures of being treated of a dermatologist?

3)would i be able to go without any health insurance?
if so, how much would it cost on average?

TY all.

TY all.

First, you've made a good decision -- even though you don't have insurance. The cost of treating scars (which is not covered by insurance is *very* expensive compared to preventing scars). There are many people on this forum looking for ways to treat scars, and they are very difficult to remove, even with the best of treatments.

Second, you may feel self-conscious about showing a doctor your acne, but you shouldn't. They have seen *everything*, and they have chosen dermatology to help people with skin problems. If you also have back/chest/shoulder acne, it is *very* important that you also show this to the dermatologist/physician, as this can affect how your acne is treated. (You will frequently receive more aggressive treatment -- possibly even Accutane -- if your acne is affecting your back/chest/shoulders.)

Do *not* be embarrassed; they have seen people with severe burns, skin deformities, and truly disfiguring conditions. You should go in to the doctor's office with the confidence that you have made the right decision and be proud of having made the effort to take care of yourself better.

You can expect them to inspect your skin, ask what treatments you have tried, and ask how long acne has been affecting you at the initial consultation. Then, the doctor will make an initial decision about your treatment, give you some prescription(s) to try, and a follow-up appointment will be made as you leave the office.

The price may be $150 to $250, maybe slightly more, depending on where you live in the U.S. (Prices vary based on cost-of-living in the area.) Be sure to tell the doctor that you don't have insurance at this time -- they will probably ask when you call. Don't be embarrassed about this either -- SO MANY don't. Remind the doctor during the appointment. This way, the doctor can be sure to prescribe you lower-cost, generic medication options instead of something that will cost you a lot of money to get filled at the pharmacy. (For example, Wal-Mart and Target are both offering $4 deals for certain prescription antibiotics -- without insurance.)

Good luck -- this is a decision you will be happy that you made ultimately. This will require more than one visit; the doctor will want to monitor your progress, but ask that you be given enough medication so that you don't have to come in monthly (unless you are given Accutane -- then you will have to come in monthly).

Feel free to email me directly here through Yahoo if you have more questions. I work in a healthcare facility and have extensive experience with physician billing and insurance.

1) Well lets be smart.....its an dematologist office...they really cant stare cuz there there to....dnt care with other people say i kno i got mild acne......

2) yes your first visit want nothin happen but he will look at your face and tell you the best methods that can help your certain kind of skin and give you a price range...he will also tell you set up another appt.

3) depend on which one ya go....usually like $ 500 if you want it done right

1. Who is gunna stand there and look at ur acne'd face except the dermatologist who's paid to look at it,and any other pacients probably there for the same thing/their own problem, nobody is going to stare or even look at ur acne on ur face trust me
i visit a dermatologist for mine

2.different procedures for different people,he'll probably give you some cream to apply at night

3. yes,but u'd have to pay them still,
i dont know the cost because i have health insurance, but i dont think it's cheap

I haven't been to a dermo, but have you checked out this website - Acne.org, it has forums and gives great advise on how to deal with acne

http://acne.org/

Definately see an dermatologist. They can give you something presription, such as antibiotics or even a cream like Retin-A (which works wonders for me!). If you can afford it, go! It's not embarrassing - no one stands around and stares at your face. It's the same as if you went to the doctor for a hurt knee, the doc would just check it out. They'll ask you questions about your diet, and what you've tried to help with the acne. Seriously, do what you can, it's worth it! And good luck!

1.its going to be costly if u go without insurance...
2.the procedures depend on your skin type/condition
3.all the ppl at the derm are all there for pretty much the same thing, everyones embarassed sitting in there so dont worrie

if you want your acne to go away you have to make it go away thats means you have to dedicate time and effort into making it go away.... like wash you face EVERY morning and night! Use some plain Dial soap when washing your face... then buy a good facial scrub by neutrogina its an acne stress facial scrub... then buy a toner by olay its called tone and cleanse... i know you a guy but i would try buying a clay mask bottle and put a mask on your face once a week or every 3 days
