If you needed surgery and had uncontrolled asthma... would the doctor give you s!

Question: I've been told by my grandma's doctor that he would not recommend any surgery for me under these circumstances.
My physician can't make my asthma quit making me black out and gag.

It depends on the operation and how severe your asthma is. For uncontrolled asthma and an elective operation, I would say wait until your asthma is controlled (via steroids, nebulizers, and oral meds). If it's an emergency surgery, then there really isn't a choice. You could also undergo a regional anesthetic, which is where the anesthesiologist will numb up part of your body. This way, they avoid any intubation whatsoever, which could exacerbate your asthma.

I can't tell you that you should listen to me and not your doctor. Listen to your doctor.

no

Asthma is not a contra-indication for anesthesia (which you need for the surgery). Unlike previous aggressive and general methods of 'knocking out' a patient, today's alternatives are milder, conscious sedation (with one medication given to sedate the patient, and Versed to make the patient not remember anything) as well as just plain old local anesthia (nerve block).

Depending on the kind of surgery (and most these days are elective and unnecessary), I would research the condition for which the surgery is to be done. A lot of times, non-surgical alternatives such as physcial therapy exist. In my opinion, most surgeons will not tell you about because the surgery is more profitable to them.
