I have a wheat allergy, is it safe for me to eat whole-grain oats?!

Question: Wheat is the only thing I'm allergic to, but I was reading the ingredients on the box and that was in it. Is it safe for me to eat? Should I worry about cross contamination?

Oats are NOT wheat - however if the box says there is wheat in Cheerios then maybe you'd better avoid them. Ask yourDoctor to be sure that oats aren't on your list of non edibles.

But again my point is that they are two completely different species of plant.

Uh, it's not called cross contamination, that's different. If you are allergic to wheat, you can't eat ANYTHING that has wheat in it. Period. That's gotta be rough.

whole grain is okay but you have to eat one at a time to really find out if it does not have any allergy reaction on you.

The wheat in Cheerios is probably not from contamination but used to make them. I haven't looked at the ingredients in Cheerios in a while though.
Oats in oatmeal may have a small contamination from wheat in the field or in some part of the processing unless you get oats from a mill that tests for wheat contamination like Uncle Bobs mill.

Yes u dhould be worried about cross contamination because wheat allergy is celiac disease, if u have this then I recommend trying a gluten free food. they can be found in the organic section at some grocery stores but if u want to try oats u will find they are sometimes processed with the same machinery that they process wheat products with my suggestion would be to see a nutritionist and see what they suggest or you can see a specialist who can help you with a diet guideline but wheat is pretty much in lamens terms, gluten it is a binder they usually recommend you consult a specilalist before you consume this product hope this advice was helpful because a wheat allergy or any allergy should not be handled lightly but yes I myself would worry about cross contamination

Some people with celiac and wheat intolerance have serious issues with oats. In Canada it's on my list of forbidden foods. Oats are often cross contaminated in the mills and silos, where the grain goes for processing...there are a number of places where it can pick up stay wheat stuff. Some cereal factories are better than others when it comes to cleaning lines from wheat containing cereals to non wheat cereals, so there is a cross contamination issue there, too.I have severe wheat problems and I never eat boxed cereals unless they are certified gluten free. I'm not sure if that helps at all, but that's my take on cheerios.
