DC has the highest rates of HIV/AIDS and other STD's. However Atlanta and other major cities have high rates also. You can go to cdc.gov to get the specifics.

cute redhead was on the right track to post CDC data; however, she's off the mark.

That data she posted is the NUMBER of AIDS cases by state. Of course it would look like NY would have the most cases -- it also has the most people! Oh, and it's only AIDS data. You would need to add in data for STDs like chlamydia, gonorrhea, syphilis, etc.

To get a better idea of how much disease burden you have in an area, you need to look at number of new cases per 100,000 population (a number known as "incidence").

Here are some data from the CDC's 2006 STD surveillance report:

The state with the highest rates of chlamydia is actually ALASKA, where there are 682 cases per 100,000 people. However, given they're a small population, you might want to hand over the crown to DC, where they have12 cases of chlamydia per 100,000 people. NY state only has 376 per 100,000.

DC has the highest rates of gonorrhea in the country: 343 cases per 100,000. Compare that to NY state, who have about 91 cases per 100,000.

DC wins that syphilis contest, too. They have 21.1 cases per 100,000. In second place is Louisiana who had 7.6 cases per 100,000. That's quite a gap!

Seems to me DC is the city (and district/state) with the highest rates of STDs in the country.
