Can Tanning Beds Help.......?!

Question: I have heard that tanning beds ( because of the UV lights) could help with SAD and acne. I have Fibromalgia pain and depression. Someone told me that if that using a tanning bed could help with both. Do you have any experience or knowledge about them and if they can help or is this just "Hype?"

I have Chronic Fatigue Syndrome/Fibrmalgia and Severe Depression. I see a specailist for the CFS and Fibromalgia. They are in Charlotte, NC and I live in SC but it is the only specialist that just treat these problems.

My doctor has been after me for years to get more sunlight and he does not mean tanning or overexposure. but he also knows I will not do it. I stay inside and rarely go out for anything. Last month he mentioned the Solar light for the face .

Then I asked him about a tanning bed. He said it would not hurt as long as I did use it and become overexposed. He said the light could help with the fatigue and depression and the heat would help the Fibromalgia. He recommended one for home use, that looks like a canopy and you sit or lounge in a chair to use it.

I have checked with a company that sells them and have been told that they have gotten people with prescriptions from their doctors for many uses including my problems. They also agreed it was good for acne too. She made a disclaimer that they could not guarantee it would help but it has helped some of their clients.

So I am glad you asked the question. It is the first time I have heard anyone else bring it up. Based on what you said and the other answers, I think I will get the 110V Canopy bed. It does not have too many bulbs and I am hoping it will help. I am at the point, I do not think anything could hurt.

I will not use it for tanning because I do not tan well anyway. but, if I have to spend the money That would help my entire body. The ones for the face, would not be sufficient for what I want.

they can sometimes cause melanoma, just go out in the sun.

I have heard the same things, and it has been proven that the lights help with depression

to an extent.. it does help.. dont overdo it though... dont go more than twice a week, you dont want to risk cancer.

it absolutely helps with SAD.... not sure about acne, but I imagine it does. Another SAD helper... Emergen-C. I drink one every morning!

Use a daylight box if you suffer from SAD. They really do work. They might help with acne but would make your skin age quicker and there's dangers of skin cancer.

I have never heard anything about pain for Fibromalgia, but it's worth a shot.
When I was in high school, I had really bad acne and I started going tanning. It took a little while, but eventually it cleared up.

There are light boxes that you can buy that simulate sunlight that are probably much safer for you than a tanning bed. I've also heard that SAD can be at least partially attributed to lack of Vitamin D.

there is good and bad
yes they might help that
but they can cause cancer also and premature aging
maybe try sitting in the sun of a morning leave before 12noon
and put sun sceen on ( but not on the acne places)try old time plain ivory soap for the acne it really helps

Don't use a tanning bed. There's a better way. Seasonal Affective Disorder can be treated with a special light that's not going to cause skin problems. SAD has to be treated regularly and if you go to a tanning salon every day that's gonna be hard on your skin and your wallet. As for acne if it's bad see a dermatologist. Try these website for SAD blue light. Feel better.

At first it may seem that it can help clear up acne, but in can then make it worse. This is just a myth that it will improve skin clarity. It actually makes your skin worse down the line. And as for depression and such, you need the real deal to improve that. The tanning beds don't have the same effect.
