Chemo Question?!

Question: Can Chemo be a reason why someone's blood pressure would elevate? Could Chemo trigger something to make your blood pressure go up? (Person's on last cyle of Chemo)

Thanks!

One reason chemotherapy may increase a person's blood pressure has to do with the amount of fluid infused during the treatment. Many types of chemo requires a lot of fluids be given to the patient before, during, or after the treatment to make sure the chemo doesn't cause other problems such as kidney failure and to make sure the drug gets "flushed" from one's system. When you get such a large amount of fluids (sometimes liters of it), just like in pipes in a house, the extra fluid increases the pressure, and you see it as an increase in the BP.

Chemo can cause kidney and urinary system damage which can be indicated by hypertension (high blood pressure). Also, some chemo drugs such as daunorubicin and doxorubicin can cause heart damage in about 1 to 10 people and this risk can be increased with high blood pressure, so, I would definitely speak with your doctor. Best of luck to ya :)

My BP shot up during chemo and I'd never had a problem before. Mine was attributed to the steroids they gave me rather than the chemo itself. But I can see where chemo could do it. It really made me bloated with water retention.

Congrats on the last cycle. Hopefully, this person will be feeling a lot better soon!
