Could birth control be causing an allergic reaction? Help!?!


Question: I was on nuva ring for 2 weeks. i got off it because i had a very itchy rash. Then i was on the depo shot and had no reactions. Now i am on the pill (low ogestrel) and i have another rash that ichtes and alot of nasty discharge. Has anyone else had this kind of reaction?

You can develop an allergic reaction to anything. Birth control drugs are analogues of your natural hormones of estrogen and progesterone. If you are allergic to those then you will have major problems.
However, from your description, I think you might actually be allergic to the drug and not the excipients because you had an allergic reaction to both the ring and the pills. Hypothetically, picture a natural hormone molecule (ie progesterone) the shape of a star. It has 5 pointy ends. Lets dull one of the points so you have a round end and 4 points. The immune system is very specific and if it recognizes the round end as being foreign, then the whole molecule is classified as foreign and you will have an allergic reaction.
When you had the depot effect, there are very few immune cells within fat to illicit an alleric reaction. That is probably why you didn't have a response to it but I question it's effectiveness.
