How can you stop a Migraine and what are the symptoms?!

Question: Thanks.

Answers: Thanks.

I have an awful one right now too.
1. throbing head
2. nausea
3. seeing spots
4. light bothers me
5. sound bothers me

How to stop it?
Take Excedrin migraine. That works for me. Also, why did you get it? Lack of sleep? Hungry? If not and you get them often, here's a bit of info.

I used to get migraines all the time, then I did a food diary and found out that there are some foods that I have sensitivities to. These are things that can cause migraines for some people:
processed foods (cold cuts, etc..)
food that has been sitting out for a while (chicken, pizza)
chocolate/coffee
too much yogurt/sour cream or aged cheese like swiss.

What all the treatments for migraine have in common is that they all change the chemistry of the brain, whether that treatment is a medication, or a daily exercise program, or avoiding certain foods. The medications fall generally into two categories: episodic medications, taken only at the time of the headache, and preventative medications that are taken daily. The type of treatment you should use depends on the severity and the frequency of your migraines.

symptoms:
The main symptom of a migraine is a throbbing headache on one side of your head. You may also feel sick to your stomach and vomit. Activity, light, noise, or odors may make the migraine worse. The pain may move from one side of your head to the other, or you may feel it on both sides at the same time. Different people have different symptoms.

Some people have an aura before the migraine begins. When you have an aura, you may first see spots, wavy lines, or flashing lights. Your hands, arms, or face may tingle or feel numb. The aura usually starts about 30 minutes before the headache. But most people do not have auras.

Migrane Treatment:

Treatment for migraine headaches can relieve the pain and symptoms of a migraine attack -- and prevent further migraine attacks.

Migraines can be treated with 2 approaches: abortive and preventive.

Abortive: The goal of abortive therapy is to prevent a migraine attack or to stop it once it starts. The prescribed medications stop a headache during its prodrome stage or once it has begun and may be taken as needed. Some can be administered as a self-injection into the thigh; others, as a wafer that melts on the tongue. These forms of medication are especially useful for people who vomit during a migraine, and they work quickly.

Abortive treatment medications include the triptans, which specifically target serotonin. They are all very similar in their action and chemical structure. The triptans are used only to treat headache pain and do not relieve pain from back problems, arthritis, menstruation, or other conditions.

* Sumatriptan (Imitrex)

* Zolmitriptan (Zomig)

* Eletriptan (Relpax)

* Naratriptan (Amerge, Naramig)

* Rizatriptan (Maxalt)

* Frovatriptan (Frova)

* Almotriptan (Axert)

The following drugs are also specific and affect serotonin, but they affect other brain chemicals. Occasionally, one of these drugs works when a triptan does not.

* Ergotamine tartrate (Cafergot)

* Dihydroergotamine (D.H.E. 45 Injection, Migranal Nasal Spray)

* Acetaminophen-isometheptene-dichloralphe... (Midrin)

* Ergotamine tartrate (Cafergot)

* Dihydroergotamine (D.H.E. 45 Injection, Migranal Nasal Spray)

* Acetaminophen-isometheptene-dichloralphe... (Midrin)

The following drugs are mainly used for nausea, but they sometimes have an abortive or preventive effect on headaches:

* Prochlorperazine (Compazine)

* Promethazine (Phenergan)

The next drugs are weak members of the narcotic class. They are not specific for migraine, but they can help relieve almost any kind of pain. Since they are habit forming, they are less desirable than the specific headache drugs listed above. These drugs should be used primarily as a "backup" for the occasions when a specific drug does not work.

* Butalbital compound (Fioricet, Fiorinal)

* Acetaminophen and codeine (Tylenol With Codeine)

Preventive: This type of treatment is considered if a migraineur has more than 1 migraine per week. The goal is to lessen the frequency and severity of the migraine attacks. Medication to prevent a migraine can be taken daily. Preventive treatment medications include the following:

*
o Medications used to treat high blood pressure - Beta-blockers (propranolol [Inderal]), calcium channel blockers (verapamil [Covera])

o Antidepressants - Amitriptyline (Elavil), nortriptyline (Pamelor)

o Antiseizure medications - Gabapentin (Neurontin), valproic acid (Depakote), topiramate (Topamax)

o Some antihistamines and anti-allergy drugs, including diphenhydramine (Benadryl) and cyproheptadine (Periactin)

Migraine Symptoms:

The symptoms of migraine headaches can occur in various combinations and include:

* Moderate to severe pain (often described as pounding, throbbing pain) that can affect whole head, or can shift from one side of the head to the other
* Sensitivity to light, noise or odors
* Blurred vision
* Nausea or vomiting, stomach upset, abdominal pain
* Loss of appetite
* Sensations of being very warm or cold
* Paleness
* Fatigue
* Dizziness
* Fever (rare)
* Bright flashing dots or lights, blind spots, wavy or jagged lines (aura)

Try Aleve (naproxen). This sometimes works for me.

I used to watch my mom puke from serious migraines for years. Then she found a reputable ACCUPUNCTURIST. I saw her walk out of his office pain-free, and after regular treatment, she never has migraines at all now. I HIGHLY recommend checking that option, I have SEEN it work with my own two eyes. Good luck!

drink a lot of water. Most headaches are caused by dehydration. Also take some good salt.

I have terrible migraines too

The symptons are what the first person commented (cant remember the name- sorry)

They are very diabilitating sometimes and i find sometimes physical education amde it worse which was horrible when iw as in school because i was taking it for my GCSEs.

Wow, some great and detailed answers....your contacts love you...I gave a thumbs up to all...

Akasha's answer was awesome, too, tho short...try a swig of pickle juice. Yeah, that jar of pickles in the fridge...the vinegar and electrolytes might be of great help, right away. Just take a few swigs of that pickle juice and either it will work, or it won't...take care, Brian
