How long contagious?!

Question: How long after the onset of symptoms of the flu is the person contagious to others? I ask because my boyfriend has been describing symptoms of the flu the past couple of days. I haven't had a flu shot, so I don't know if it's safe to be around him.

will depend on the age and how health is the person.

Studies show that most healthy adults may be able to infect others from 1 day prior to becoming sick and for 5 days after they first develop symptoms.

Some young children and people with weakened immune systems may be contagious for longer than a week.

until they take antibiotics for 24 hours.

After he has found out it truly is the flu and gets antibiotics. There is a 2 week period that he will still be contagious. The flu shot doesn't always work so your kind of taking a chance either way you go if your going to be around him. The best thing is to wash you hands frequently and anything he eats or drinks off of or out of with soap, water and just a little bleach in the water, and rinse well.
