Anyone have info on taking Synthroid for their Thyroid?!

Question: I just started taking Synthroid(Levothyroxine) 50 mg for my thyroid. Does anyone have any experience with taking this drug. I have gained alot of weight, dry hair, brittle nails...ect...been on this for about three to four weeks and no change in anything or even energy levels. Even with a very good diet and exercise plan. Please help. Thank You

If you just started on thyroid medication for the first time, keep in mind that you most likely will have to adjust a time or two more before you'll be on the right dose.

The doc sees what your TSH, T3, T4 levels are, and "guesses" as to what dose might be best to get you back within normal ranges. They sometimes may guess too high, sometimes too low... it takes a few months for it to be in your system and your thyroid to adjust to that level before they can re-test and see how much it has helped.

In your case, just a few weeks isn't long enough, but it could be that 50 mg won't be enough... they may have to bump you to 75 or 100.

I know it is frustrating, but just hang in there. In the meantime I suggest using a good hair conditioner, maybe some eyelash conditioner, and a good lotion that has olive oil or shea butter in it for extra hydration.

You may consider taking a good multivitamin to help with your energy levels as well.

Hang in there!

You should be aware that Synthroid does not come in milligrams, it comes only in micrograms -- if you are taking milligrams you need to see your doctor or your pharmacist as the dosage is definitely wrong -- look at your pills again, if it is a white pill, it is 50 micrograms not milligrams -- you can go to this website and look at dosages

also make certain you write down your correct dosage because if you tell medical people you are taking milligrams instead of micrograms they could inadvertantly give you the wrong dosage creating a real problem for you.

I have been on synthroid for 30 years now due to a thyroidectomy for cancer.

I HAVE BEEN ON SYNTHROID FOR 22 YEARS. THE IDEA IS TO SET YOU ON AN EVEN KEEL AS IF YOUR THYROID WORKED PROPERLY. YOU CAN'T EAT BRUSSELS SPROUTS OR ITS LIKE YOU SKIPPED YOU MED THAT DAY. SPROUTS ARE MY FAV VEG. ALSO FAMILY DOCTORS OFTEN DO NOT TREAT THIS CORRECTLY. A FAMILY DOCTOR ALMOST KILLED MY MOTHER WITH WAY TO HIGH A DOSE. YOU SHOULD SEE AN ENDOCRINOLOGIST. ALSO PLEASE NOTE THIS RUNS IN FAMILIES SO WATCH YOUR LOVED ONES. ALSO YOU ARE AT HIGH RISK FOR RHEUMATOID ARTHRITIS . I HAVE IT. OR LUPUS BECAUSE THIS IS A DISEASE OF THE AUTOIMMUNE SYSTEM. ALSO YOU CAN SUFFER DEPRESSION AND RINGING IN THE EARS OR IT MAY BE THAT YOU HEAR YOUR OWN HEART BEATING...ALL THE TIME. ITS PAR FOR THE COURSE. AIN'T LIFE FUN!
