Ten points to the first sensible answer

Asbestos has been found to be rather dangerous stuff. The asbestos fibres can get into the lungs and cause all number of horrible medical complaints including cancer.

There are strict health and safety laws for the removal and disposal of all items containing (or potentially containing) asbestos.

If you have been working for a company doing this then they should have provided you with the correct PPE and training. If they havnt then they can be in SERIOUS trouble.

If it is home improvement-type work then you really need to be more carful. Facemasks and goggles are the least you should be wearing. In actual fact you should be emplying a registered company to do this for you.

Hope you are ok

I just hope you have been wearing a face mask....

It is dangerous but it normally takes at least 20 years before you get cancer and die horribly.

Well, my grandad used to work with asbestos before they knew better and that was ohhh about 30 years ago...

Then when to the doctors and was told he has a suspicious shadow on his lungs that is very likely asbestos related and needs monitoring.

He has never smoked etc and now has dodgy lungs for spending a very short period working with the stuff without a mask.

So you probably have a future of lung problems ahead of you and there is nothing you can do about it now.

you have answered your own question, it`s not now you have to be consernd with it`s in 20yrs time , so just think about it when you cannot get your breath

I am not a doctor, or an epidemiologist, or a health care worker of any sort. I'm only going from memory here. Take it for what you think it's worth.

If you've been breathing the dust, it's not good for you. It doesn't mean you're going to seize up from lung cancer or silicosis right away, though. The asbestos workers that developed diseases from their exposure had long-term exposure to the stuff. So it seems to me that a little bit for just one time probably won't kill you. However, if you continue to do this, I'd look into a good quality mask that filters small particles, just to be safe.

I'm an asbestos supervisor, and i can tell you en less your wearing a respirator you could be in big trouble..always keep dust down with amended water..ware a respirator and disposable suit..we set up remote showers that's how dangerous it is.report this to the dept of public health,,get a check up to see if you got any spots in your lungs, chest x rays...asbestos is,lung cancer colen cancer, stomic and throat cancer.the latency period is like 15 to 20 years before you start feeling the effects..we are trained by dept of public health so we are not tricked into UN safe work..good luck

Not very. You won't die for quite a few years, even though it may be painful and slow. You'll probably be wiped out while speeding in your mother's corsa before then anyway.

Very! Why didn't you seek advice before you started?

It can be incredibly dangerous. The EPA has a whole set of very strict guidelines for the procedure of asbestos removal. It should only done by a certified and registered professional who knows what they're doing.
We recently had asbestos removed from our attic and we had to get guys that worked for the city to come in and do it. The sealed the whole top of the house off with plastic, it looked like something out of ET. They had to wear 3 overalls, one they removed when they left the attic, the next they removed at the top of the stairs and the third they removed before they left the house. We had to stay in a hotel while it was being done.

There are also very strict regulations for the disposal of asbestos. It must be stored in no less than 3 layers of plastic and it has to be disposed of at a registered, safe asbestos disposal site.

My boyfriend was unsure the guys were doing their job properly, at first so he actually called the EPA. They have experts on asbestos there and he told him everything he needed to know. Maybe you could call them if you want to know anything in more detail?

their are two types of asbestos, grey and blue.

Apparently blue is the most dangerous.

and even then, it is only the dust that is dangerous. Putting this together you only have to worry if the asbestos was blue (actually blueish grey) and you have inhaled the dust.

Of course you haven't inhaled the dust because you put on a decent mask and you regularly soaked the ceiling in water to reduce the amount of dust released into the air didn't you?

it is very dangerous, especially if you do not wear breathing protection or a simple face mask!

prolonged inhalation of asbestos or asbesos containg materials can lead to lung damage, cancer and other nasty diseases that cause painful death

hope you wore a mask, if not go to the docs and tell them u have been working around asbestos without protection, maybe then can help you in the earliest opportunity

good luck

First of all the blue asbestos is the most dangerous. second to that are the very loose fibre types. The compact roof types can be dangerous if disturbed or cut up. The bad news is that any particles you have breathed in, cannot be got out, when magnified, they are like barbes. If the company you worked for did not provide you with protective gear and handling information and warnings, they are contravening the health and safety at work act and can be prosecuted if proven to have been negligent. You should see your doctor and explain you have been exposed and you need an ex-ray to determin any damage.Shortness of breath and wheezyness are symptoms.

Asbestos is dangerous stuff, you should always were a face mask if the dust gets into your lungs it can be fatal, I would suggest seeing a doctor as soon as possible ./

Look up "mesothelioma" and you will have your answer.
For God's sake, wear protective gear and use a respirator!!!
