I have a question about genetics testing?!

Question: Is it possible for a person to test negative on a brca mutation test even if they have a family history of cancer? I ask this question because I met a lady who had cancer 3 years ago and she told me she tested negative on the genetics test. I don't believe her. How can you test negative for this kind of test if you have a famiy history of cancer? Can this be possible?

I had breast cancer in 2004, my sister had it 15 years ago, my dad's sister had it twice. My dad had colon cancer, one of his brothers and both his parents died from it and his other brother had prostate cancer. My mom's dad died of Lymphoma and a cousin on my mom's side had kidney cancer. Because of all the cancer in my family (I am one of 11 children) and have over 40 nieces and nephews. I was recently tested for the BRCA gene mutations so I could help alert my family if needed. I do not have the mutations but who is to say there aren't any other gene mutations that can lead to cancer that haven't been discovered yet. Only recently have scientists been able to map the human genome and are continuing to discover more information about genetics every day.

Not all cancer is genetic, some types are like some breast cancers. If a close family member has cancer this can increase your chances of developing cancer too.

If she tested negative for the gene, then surly its still possible that she has contracted cancer due to other reasons. She may have just been unlucky, environmental factors, age...

There are so may things which influence cancer and why they start. By illuminating the possibility that you have a genetic tendency to develop one type of cancer is not to say that you will not develop it any way.
