Edema (fluid retention) is a side effect of lithium. Weight gain or loss (from baseline before therapy starts) is a very common side effect and from what I've read and seen weight gain is more common than loss. make sure your doctor is aware of swelling due to fluid retention Some is normal but if it is causing a serious fluid imbalance that should be taken care of as well.
