Constant stinging in urethra?!

Question: Hi!

Ever since I can remember I have had a burning/ stinging pain just a little way up into my urethra. It's especially bad before and after I pee (no pain during urination, though). I have had two UTIs in the past 2 months and have taken antibiotics. But as soon as I quit taking the antibiotics the stinging comes back. I don't have frequent urination or stabbing pains...I don't know if that matters. I am only 20 years old and it's driving me crazy. I remember being 14 and thinking, OMG this stinging is driving me crazy, but it wasn't constant. Now, it's nearly constant.

Any help would be great!!! Diet, medical, ideas...all welcome.

P.S. I don't have any STD's I know for a fact.

Thank you. =D

Hi sweetie.....I'm so sorry you are having this discomfort.

I know you have been on antibiotics. Don't know who was prescribing them, but I seriously think you need to see a Urologist. Please. You are too young to be having such problems. There wouldn't be anyone here who knows what to do. I don't even know.

We can all tell you: drink 8 glasses of water (flavored or not) each and every day; drink cranberry juice or eat cranberrys daily. You can also check out your vitamin counter or check out www.puritanpride.com for a mail order vitamin shop that is very very reasonable for cranberry supplements.

Sometimes I think I can swallow a pill better than drink cranberry juice daily!

Do this until your appointment comes up with the urologist.

You have been suffering way too long with this. It should have been adressed while you were still a kid.

Good luck,
God Bless
I am an RN

If it IS a UTI, my question to you is: Did you stop taking the anti-biotics with more pills to spare? If so, you probably have another UTI. They give you a lot of antibiotics for a reason: you take them. Just because it 'feels' like it's gone doesn't mean it is. The bacteria could multiply and BANG, you have to take another 5 weeks of antibiotics.

Other then that, it could be another medical problem that only a doctor could effectively diagnose.

I think you might want to check with a urologist. They can help you if you have chronic UTI's or if something else is causing the stinging. You shouldn't have to live with it.

have you spoke to your Dr. about this ? is this what you are on antibiotics for?if Dr.is aware what has he done for you? if not you need to go see him explain all this to him , you may be passing kidney or bladder stones ?you may have something cancerous going on ,or you may just be having bladder spasms,?one thing i know for sure is that this pain is not normal so something needs to be done.if you need to get another Dr.opinion, don't mess around get checked.

Perhaps it's time to see a specialist. Maybe a uriologist or nephrologist (kidney doctor).

you might have a yeast infection from the antibotics
you can buy over the counter medications for this at walmart and drug stores
eat yogart it is suppose to help
if not you need to see a doctor if it doesnt clear up
drink alot of water
forget cranberry juice unless you just like it

yea you do

Please do Not try to self-diagnose but talk with your family dr about providing you with a referral to a urologist (specialist of urinary tract including kidneys, bladder). You may have a condition known as interstitial cystitis (IC) which is an inflammation of the bladder lining though that's just speculation on my part as a layperson. The urologist may suggest getting some tests done to rule things out too.

I have 'irritable bladder', a condition where one feels the urge to urinate along with a frequent need though typically not much urine comes out when in the restroom. I never had the test to see if hemorrhages were present which can indicate IC as one needs to be given general anesthesia, and I'm allergic. For the irritable bladder, the urologist put me on ditropan, however, it made me very dizzy so I had to stop it the next day.

Please note, regarding cranberry juice, that it's not proven that it can help bladder infections and that the person may need to drink an inordinate amount for any type of benefit. If a person has IC or even 'irritable bladder', the person may be sensitive, making the symptoms worse, due to the cranberry anyway. Other foods to avoid in those with IC are caffeine, vitamins (I take capsules albeit not officially diagnosed) and acidic foods such as citric fruits (oranges, pineapple, lemon, tomatoes) and even dairy products.
