Cancer....Why???!

Question: I hate the word cancer. It seems like everytime you turn around someone is annoucing that they have cancer. I recently lost my dad to cancer, metastatic adenocarcinoma September 24, 2007. A year before, I lost my grandfather (his dad), lung cancer April 2006. My dad was always healthy. He didn't drink, smoke, or even curse. My mom told us that he started having symptoms of something back in 2002. She stated that he was always burping a lot, always tired, and his eyes were jaundiced. But everyone knows, men being men, will not go to the doctor. When he finally did go, he was diagnosed with Stage IV cancer of unknown primary. When he was diagnosed, we were told that it was treatable. But he's gone. I know it may sound mean, but their are tons of people in this world who do bad things and are still alive. Why?

I am sorry to hear about your dad and grandfather. I know it is tough to lose someone. My son (21 months old) has a cancer called "Melanotic Neuroectodermal Tumor of Infancy" that is extremely rare and I have asked myself "WHY?" so many times that I can't even count. He is so innocent and happy and has no idea what is going on with him. It isn't fair!! I agree with you about people in this world who do the bad things and breeze through life with no problems at all and those who are good and innocent have to deal with the most horrible things. Children especially do not deserve to get sick like this.

Stop blaming other people for things that happen. The people that do bad things have their own problems to deal with, believe it or not.

Cancer was always around, even dinosaurs had malignant tumors; what has probably spread it was the fact that medicine allows the weakest of genes to survive and reproduce. Not to mention chemicals in everything we eat and drink, unless you live in a log cabin and hunt and forage.

I agree with you totally. My mom had breast cancer a couple of years ago. She also did no smoke, drink or anything. She has worked so hard her whole life. She is cancer fee now but is scared to death of Dr.'s. I don't know why the good people seem to get the bad end of the stick. Cause there are a lot of nasty and mean people out there that are fine today.

I know exactly how you feel and I ask myself the same questions...but life is not fair and that's the only answer there is... I'm not going to give you the whole God answer either because I don't agree with it myself... I think everything happens for a reason though... even though most of the time we end up never finding out what the hell the reason is..

Unfortunatly, poetic justice only happens in fairy tales.... I'm sorry to hear of your losses. I lost a good friend of mine 3/5/08. She has had three liver transplants and two lung surgeries. She would have been 25 at the end of June. "Only the good die young."

So sorry to hear about your loss....I believe that God isn't making the call as to when or why a person gets a horrible disease. God allows people to make their own choices- risks are our choice, the way society runs is not His doing. Environmental health issues and personal choices of what we eat or consume, are more likely reasons we get diseases. Also genetics could play a part.
It always seems like those who do bad things should be punished, and those we love should be safe from harm. I know what you are feeling.

It's an interaction between genes and environment - or in other words - horrible, awful luck. There is no sense to why some people live to a ripe old age and some are lost early. Cancer isn't a punishment, it isn't a test, it's an indiscriminate, horrible disease that humanity's best endeavours are working to prevent and cure - all too slowly.

You sound (rightly) hugely pissed off at this awful disease. Fight back. Encourage the men in your life to see the doctor if they're ill. Raise funds to support cancer charities. Perhaps even consider a career that will allow you to fight this horrible disease head on.

I'm not going to feed you some patronising crap about how then it will have been for a reason - it's still a horrible, meaningless loss. But your anger needs an outlet, for your own sake.

Well, your right there are plenty of bad people still alive... That honestly has nothing to do with who comes down with cancer.. or what kind of cancer they come down with.. Your grieving for your lose... And trying to find something to blame it on.. That is normal . I guess.. I am sorry for your loss.
