Cigarette smoke?!

Question: I have always had issues with people smoking around me. I had lung problems as a child, and when I am around cig smoke, I get very nauseous, my heart rate increases, get flushed, etc. I have several in-laws who smoke who come to visit. My husband informed them that smoking is very bothersome to me. They are very heavy smokers and they go outside to smoke while they are here. I'm glad that they are being respectful of me, but it makes me feel bad for asking them to smoke outside. They go outside even if it's very cold or rainy and I just get this guilty feeling for some reason and feel that the other people visiting with them look down on me and think I "make" them go outside to smoke (even though the other visitors are non smokers, they grew up with it their entire lives, are used to it, and probably don't understand why I have a problem. This is how I feel anyway). Sometimes I just want to tell them to stay inside, but at the same time, I know it will make me sick. Opinions?

No, they made a decision that is personally detrimental to their health and offensive to most these days. It is not bad manners to not let people smoke, say curse words, drink/drink excessively in your home, use bad manners, discipline your kids, dig in things they're not supposed to.....
you get the picture. Your house is your castle, truly. They should respect that. If they didn't care for you, they wouldn't come to your house and observe your requests, so don't worry. I don't go to someone elses house and expect them not to smoke while I'm there, but I might visit with them out on the porch!

go away from smoke and don't go near them\

designate a room for smoking, put in a hepa air handling device and let them smoke in that room when its cold or you have inclement weather

Alot of people don't like ciggarette smoke and avoid it at all costs. I understand where you feel upset for making them go outside to smoke, but I don't blame you at all! I would NEVER let people smoke in my house! Even being in a house that has been smoked in will make people sick, Don't feel bad at all!

A lot of people forbid smoking in their homes. Your visitors choose to smoke. They could just decide not to smoke (in spite of their cravings) and they wouldn't have to go outside.

I get nauseous when I'm anywhere near Cigarette Smoke, I try to stay away from people that smoke for that reason, there is just some people that can't stand it. I can't even be in some restaurants because of it, embarrassing? NO KIDDING, but that's me, and since I can't do anything about it... I live with it. Just keep on telling the people to go outside, if they want to smoke so bad, they'll have to be fine with doing it in cold, wet or ugly weather.

well smoking can be bothersome to alot of people and when the ones that r smoking r outside, then try saying 'thank u' or somthin' (maby it will make u fell less guilty)

It's your house, your rules. But, if you ever decide to go to any of their houses, you shouldn't expect them to go outside of their house for you. That wouldn't right.

First of all, it's your house. Whether they like it or not, they have to follow your rules. Even stupid ones. If you told them they had to wear a sock on their head in your house, if they wanted to come inside, they would have to respect your request. (It's a little far-fetched, but still....)

It's not your fault that you can't be around cigarette smoke, but it is their fault that they smoke. But if you are really feeling guilty, designate one room in you house (not commonly used) as a smoking room. Let anyone smoke in that room, and only in the room. The smoke will still float throughout the rest of the house, but won't be nearly as strong as if they lit up in your living room.

Best of luck!
