'Hyper' means too much of something. 'Hypo' means too little.

Hyperglycemia means high blood sugar. That doesn't mean diabetes, but diabetes causes high blood sugar, which is not bad in itself but leads to 'complications' like blindness, kidney failure, etc.

Hypoglycemia means low blood sugar. Which causes fatigue, shakiness, bad moods, etc.

Anyone can be hyper- or hypo-glycemic from time to time. Just after you drink a can of soda, you are hyperglycemic. If you haven't eaten for a long time and you get that tired feelling, you are hypoglycemic.

If you are healthy, your body corrects these conditions by itself. The problem is when you have a -chronic- hyper or hypoglycemia that lasts over a long period of time. People with chronic hyperglycemia are diabetics. People with hypoglycemia, they call that 'hypoglycemia' and it is called 'the opposite of diabetes', but people with chronic hypoglycemia have a very high statistical probability of later developing diabetes.

it is a form of diabetes. Its where your blood sugar goes too low. her body is producing too much insulin.

hypoglycemia is the opposite of diabetes, hyperglycemia is indeed diabetes.
hypoglycemia means not enough sugar in the body
hyperglycemia means way too much sugar.

your friend needs to get her terms straight.

um who told her it wasn't diabetes? hyperglycemia is the number one sign of diabetes. she better double check that. diabetes can lead to many bad health probs.

i am hypoglycemic..its not anything to bad...she will just get really cranky when she is hungry..if she eats to much sugar she will get tired and it will be really hard to wake her up...she just has to watch what she eats is all...its no where near as extreme as diabetes. acid reflux isnt going to affect her hypoglycemia at all..acid reflux just sucks really bad...my dad has it.

It is not the 'opposite' of diabetes. Hyperglycaemia is simply high blood sugar and diabetics get this too - not just low blood sugar. Hyperglycaemia is generally found in people with diabetes. Your friend should go back to her doctor and get confirmation of her diagnosis.

And regarding the answers above - hypoglycaemia isn't the opposite of diabetes either. There is NO opposite of diabetes, both HYPERglycaemia and HYPOglycaemia are symptoms of diabetes.

In fact they are very similar in some ways. She has what is commonly called low blood sugar. You will never run the risk of death from it as you do with Diabetes. I actually had it once long ago when I was eating poorly over a summer. I ate mostly starchy foods which is one of the culprits. Stay away from sodas, white bread or any that is not whole grain. Also watch anything with too much sugar. It causes a spike that causes dizziness and on occasion for some fainting. My doctor once told me the only problem is that you will have nausea and may faint. This illness can actually be removed with proper exercise and diet. The strange part of it is, if you do not do what is needed to get rid of it, you can later develop diabetes. You can eat sweets, but try in smaller amount and in moderation. Sodas are a no no. They are probably right along side of bad starches as the worse. If you want a really good site to go to for info, try www.NIH.gov. Good luck.
