Yes you can contract it with a condom. The virus is much smaller than the pours in the condom.(each condom as tiny microscoping holes. to small for sperm but to large for virus'. Also any skin contact can become infected. I would say no to the gift that keeps on giving.
a condom protects your penis, but it does not protect your area at the base of the penis. If she has outbreaks outside of her vaginal area, all that has to happen is skin to skin contact. I suggest she try the medication valtrex to suppress outbreaks or the other possibility is to use female condoms which offer more protection at the base of the penis and around the vaginal opening.
