Would a Doctor Help me please?!

Question: I was in hospital for a week and came out 10 days ago.
I was admitted during the night. The next day scans showed that I had cysts on my ovaries and I am booked in to have the both ovaries removed and a hysterectomy on 17th.

I'm feeling much better at the moment and the pain has lifted presumably because the cysts have gone down albeit temporarily.

Whilst there I had blood test etc and today I have been informed that I have a urinal infection and need antibiotics.

If I have a urinal infection wouldn't I know about it, with some symptoms I mean?

I do suffer with Ulcerative Colitis, but that's the bowel and it's bleeding a bit at the mo' with some diarrhea, but I don't and never did feel anything wrong with my water works!

Should I take the anti-biotics, or not?

And won't the course still be running when I am admitted to hospital? Will that matter?

And what about the Azathioprine I take for my Colitis, will that interfere with my recovery from the operation?

Urinary tract infections don't always show symptoms until the infection has advanced, so you could easily have an infection without knowing it. You are way better off going into surgery after taking antibiotics you don't need than skipping antibiotics that you actually need. You can call the surgeon's office and inform them that you will still be on antibiotics a the time of the surgery and see if this is a problem, and also ask about the Azathioprine.

You need to take the antibiotics and ask the doctor all of your questions. No one is capable to answer those on here.

Firstly you cannot detect a urinary infection from a blood test. You need to have a urine microscopy and culture.

They generally don't perform surgery on a person with an active infection, although some hospitals do have protocols for doing so. Being on a course of antibiotics when you're admitted is not a problem though. All hospitals start an antibiotic prior to surgery as it decreases risk of surgical infection. But if they haven't prescribed any antibiotics you needn't take any.

Azathioprine does interfere with recovery a bit. You need to talk it out with your doctor before you get the surgery done. Don't worry, it's not that much of a problem.

You need to sit down with your doctor and have him counsel you about all this. A third party person who has never seen you can't give you advice. Sit him down and tell him you need to know everything. It's your right as a patient.
