I understand exactly where you are coming from. I worked for a Dr that was Spanish, even though he spoke English he never made himself clear to me or any of the patients. He would get aggravated if someone asked him to repeat himself. I would spend all afternoon on the phone with parents explaining what he should have.
Now to answer your question. It does not necessarily mean your son has asthma. He more than likely just has a bad respiratory infection and needs the Meds to help with his breathing until the infection clears. Make a follow up appt with another Dr. I Hope you will find one that takes the time to explain to you in terms you understand. Good Luck

Why don't you ASK????? It's also used for bronchitis and other respiratory problems. For Petes sake, it's your kid...start asking

Usually that is what Albuterol is prescribed for and sometimes in addition to a nebulizer.

You should talk with your childs doctor to fully understand what he has and risks, effects, treatments, etc.

Good thing you're finding another doctor if this one intimidates you to the point of medicating your child without understanding why and then posting to YA.
You should NEVER leave a doctor's office until ALL your questions have been answered fully. That's their responsibility. And you NEVER take or give medication wthout knowing what it is, what it's for and how it might effect the person )or interact with other medication or even foods).

Your child is too important to have all this left to chance. And if you need to, take another adult with you to your child's doctor to ask these questions for you. Hope s/he is better soon.

BTW - if your doctor cannot or will not answer all your questions, let them know that you will be reporting them to a patient advocacy agency (through either the hospital or your insurance). That should get you information ina hurry!

he does not necessarily have asthma. albuterol is a fast acting bronchodilator, meaning that it opens up your airway quickly. he may be prescribed this for a number of reasons. go to web md for more info re this med!

It is possible that he has asthma but they do use it for other symptoms as well for temporary relieve. People with bronchitis are given it. You son is obviously having some lung or breathing issues to receive this medication. You can research meds on Web MD

i don't have asthma, & i was also prescribed that, so i'm in your son's same situation.

Why is this medication prescribed? Return to top
Albuterol is used to prevent and treat wheezing, difficulty breathing and chest tightness caused by lung diseases such as asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD; a group of diseases that affect the lungs and airways). Albuterol inhalation aerosol is also used to prevent breathing difficulties during exercise. Albuterol is in a class of medications called bronchodilators. It works by relaxing and opening air passages to the lungs to make breathing easier.

liquid albuterol is horrible. There is no reason to use it and for a doctor to prescribe it says that he is not a good doctor, at least not a good one for respiratory conditions.. Seriously liquid albuterol takes longer to work and causes much worse side effects. Albuterol is prescribed in mdi (inhaler) with spacer (even with infants there are masks made to use for infants) or to be used with a nebulizer.

albuterol is a bronchodialator. It is prescribed for asthma, for bronchitis, for bronchiolitis, for pneumonia and sometimes for certain allergies that cause asthmatic type reactions.

a good place for info is http://www.nationaljewish.org

I am glad you said you are switching doctors.
