If a clinician feels that an HIV - negative test result is innacurate or a person may have been very recently infected and has not yet seroconverted, there are other tests that can be run to see whether a person is, in fact, HIV-positive.

These tests are very expensive and are only warranted in specific situations. Outside of these specific situations, these tests are rarely performed.

With the standard HIV antibody test, if 100 people were infected today:
-75 of them would test positive 17-20 days from now
-95 of them would test positive by 2 months from today
-over 99 would test positive by 3 months
-the other half a person (that's statistics for you!) would test positive by 6 months (they test positive later because they already have a severely weakened immune system from some other illness/treatment and it takes their immune system longer to respond)

So, the standard test is quite accurate by 3 months post-infection.
