Answers: i am diabetic, chf. high bp ...i have been inactive due to 2 knee replacements

I am 9 years younger than you and I will have the gastric bypass due to 2 knee replacements, and a metal rod and screws in my back. I talked to my Doctor and he said that was a good idea for me. I also have high blood pressure, diabetes and thyroid problems and most of all DJD. It wasn't a tough decision after all the facts were in. I do water aerobics because of my DJD and I do Curves and all I do is firm up my fat.....My medicine keeps me from losing weight and I am NOT LAZY to lose weight the right way....it just didn't work.
Talk to your doctor about the surgery, he will be the one to okay surgery to a Weight Loss Doctor anyway....

WHAT IS DJD? Report It

  • Talk to your doctor. I don't think 69 is too old for surgery, the lap-band is much less intrusive than some other surgical procedures and weight is a real factor in diabetes.

My next door neighbor had the bypass surgery and she is off her diabetes meds entirely. She still tests and watches her diet but no meds.

I am a type 2 myself but I can't claim weight as a problem. In fact my doctor told me he would not be concerned if I put on a few pounds. My height weight ratio falls at were a 25 year old should be and I am 60 plus a few days.

And best wish and good luck. I hope you can get it and I also hope it really helps you.

I would at least talk to your doctor about it. I have heard that a lot of diabetics that are having a hard time losing weight are getting the lap band. Your doctor would know best

Don't do it. I work in vocational rehabilitation and many of my clients are victims of lapband or gastric by-pass that has gone wrong. How about some physical therapy instead? Can you walk daily to strengthen those leg muscles? Also work with a dietician so you can eat healthy and lose weight naturally. I kept a journal and was surprised at what I was actually eating. It was not easy to organize meals with only 1500 calories and 50 carbs, but it is possible. At your age, your body does not need stress from surgery. I will be looking forward to hearing about your decision.

I had a friend who had lap-band and nearly died from the anethesia. I had another who developed cancer because of all the stress in her body.

Don't do it. Opt for healthier ways to cope with your weight.

By far...absolutely. Check it out. The lap band is the way to go. Make sure you look for an experienced lap band surgeon. Do your homework. It worked for me and I never had any complications...It is not and easy process and don't ever let anyone tell you the lap band is the lazy way out. It is not. The lap-band is only a tool to help lose weight not a fix. GOOD LUCK!
