How on earth would one vomit silently?!

Question: In the Thin documentary, both Alisa and Polly (RIP) are shown silently purging their food. How is that even possible? Surely the vomiting action triggers the vocal chords in the same way coughing does?

I'm not asking for 'tIpZ && tRiCkZz' here; I genuinely don't see how this would work.

I'm guessing people who are chronic bulimics have so much experience, unfortunately, that they have learned how to suppress any coughing, gagging, or vocal sounds one might make during vomiting, as well as any other signs of their disease. Since they are inducing vomiting, they have control over how they make themselves vomit. So sticking your finger down your throat takes less exhertion and effort than when you have a stomach virus and your stomach muscles are contracting themselves to purge out the food. Plus the gag reflex at the back of the throat is easy to trigger (have you ever been to the dentist and had him poking around back there and accidentally had a gag reflex?); the stuff just comes up, whereas when you're sick with a bug it's your stomach, not your throat, making you vomit, which takes more effort, which is why you may accidentally make noises - the repetitive contraction of your abdominal muscles (and lungs) makes it difficult for you to breathe in, causing gasping and coughing; if your stomach is having a particularly hard time pushing it all the way up, like if you're weak from hours of being sick, the upper part of your throat can try to do the rest, which may cause a pushing, sort-of-cough sound. Also, I'm not sure of the anatomy, but I'm pretty sure food - whether going down or up - doesn't go anywhere near your larynx or pharynx but rather down your esophagus - or else every time you eat you would be getting food stuck in your voicebox. But when you induce vomiting, you stick your finger down your throat - hell, I had this one friend who, when drunk or hungover, could simply look into the toilet and vomit - it's a one-and-done kind of thing, not multiple contractions of your stomach. You can vomit once, take a deep breath, then do it again if you want, I suppose.

Plus every person is different. When my mom is sick with a bug, I can hear her coughing and making noise; but when my brother or dad is sick, it's pretty silent. Not everyone makes that hulring "hrrwaawww" kind of noise when they vomit like is exaggerated on TV/movies either. I suppose if you breathe deeply enough and get enough oxygen before/during, you're not strugging so much for air, gasping, or coughing.

Oh, and in case anyone accuses me of knowing too much about this lol, I used to have a little problem with drinking too much and discovered the "making yourself puke" method of getting it over with when nauseous instead of feeling sick for a long time and getting so anxious about it that I would shake. It wasn't always quieter than involuntarily puking, though, but that's probably b/c I was nauseous and prone to puking to begin with UGH stupid. :-x

I'm not sure to be honest.
I don't think I could but I do know a girl I used to work with was pregnant and had really bad morning sickness. She was serving a customer and had to throw up so she went down behind the counter on the pretence of getting a bag for the customer's goods and actually threw up into one!
I have no idea how she got away with that one without the customer knowing lol

it is more posible than you think, when you make yourself.. er you know, you don't always gag. gaging is caused my it comeing up, so if you iritate your throught enough you can actualy bipass it and silently purge.

you get used to it in the end, once you've been sick that many times you can control the urge to make noise.

When i was pregnant and i kept it secret for 3 months i had the most horrendousmorning sickness well all day really sometimes i used eat my dinner and almost straight away id be straight to the bathroon where i would throw up to such and extent my dinner would be coming out of my nose and the drink id just had was still cold! The bathroom was right next to the kitchen where they would all be eating the kitchen was the size of a shoe box.
If need be you can be silent.
Oh ye noone never knew i was being sick.
x
