How can i postpone diabetes as long as possible?!

Question: im still in my (late)teenhood and my mum has diabetes. i feel lik i AM going to get it when im an adult. i eat A LOT. but im not overweight. my weight is normal. Anyways, i avoid junk food at all costs. i dont even drink coke and i dont lik stuff which are too sweet. But i eat rice a lot. But being me, i go through phases.

Phase 1: for months i only eat a serving of rice per day or no rice at all. just fish and vege and carbs

Phase 2: eat loads of food, 2 servings of rice per day for 3-4 weeks?

i used to go to gym 3-4 times a week. but i slowly and gradually stop. nowadays i go to gym once in two weeks, for only 20mins. and i do swimming at school for 1hr 15 mins. and i know u can postpone diabetes. cos i might not after all be born with it. im jus paranoid but better safe than sorry!

It sounds to me as if you are very aware of many of the causes of diabetes, and you are trying to take care of yourself. Congratulations! Although I would suggest that you use brown rice, and not enriched white rice, and measure your portions so that you don't over do it in that area. Also you might want to add to your regime, keeping a food and exercise diary. That will tell you precicely the areas where you might fall short. drink a lot of water also, and don't stop the physical activity. That is important. When you feel yourself going through a "lazy" phase, or when you think you might fall short in the exercise, change your workout. Go swimming or ride a bike, or roller blade, but keep active, even if you must force yourself to do it. Get the Diabetics Association cook book and use it as a guideline to your eating choices.

Eat healthy, exercise and keep fit, what will be will be. Good luck.

To stave off diabetes for as long as you can, exercise and eat like you already have it.

You are doing good with avoiding the junk food, but too many starchy things like rice, pasta, bread, white potatoes, etc., can be just as bad as junk food for a diabetic or someone prone to the disease.

Make whatever grains you do eat whole grains, and know that you will always have to limit the amount you eat. With diabetes, you need to watch both calories and carbs, and eat 5 or 6 small meals per day instead of 3 large ones. Your caloric needs as a teen are still higher than your mom's though, so you don't need to go on some ridiculous diet or anything.

Note that the diabetic food guide pyramid is a little different from the regular one.
